Last Day of the Year.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
If you'd like to be part of the Itzl Alert Network, please leave a comment asking to join, or send us a message asking to join. We'd love to have you. The bigger our network, the less likely someone will be stranded all alone.
A "wintry mix" is icing things up a bit. It's borderline warm enough to mostly be rain, but it's also cold enough that cold things are icing up.
Like cars.
In order to not have to scrape ice off my car, I've covered the windows. In past years, I used heavy duty plastic sold to cover car windows, and they'd last one or two days of ice and then be trash.
I couldn't afford to go that route this year.
When I was cleaning out the infamous dead squirrel closet, I found the bed sheets for the kids' beds - twin sized sheets. None of us have twin-sized beds. I'd contemplated giving the sheets to the vet, but before I could do that, the ice storm/non-blizzard was on it's way in.
I had an idea. It couldn't really hurt. I could fasten the sheets over the car windows. I'm sure the neighbors got a good laugh out of the Aladdin and Snoopy sheets covering my car, but last Wednesday, when I got up, those sheets lifted right off the windows. A quick slap on the ground shattered the ice off the sheets - and the windows were clear!
The sheets were flexible, and practically dry so I folded them and stuck them in the car. They went over the windows again at work.
And they went on my windows last night.
The bed sheets worked better than the plastic car window covers.
So, the vet will get fewer sheets and I won't have to scrape iced windows.
