These three have progressive shows as you know. However, they are also not quite as Democratic as you think. Because it's a holiday today, they are broadcasting 'best of' shows.
As some might know here, I tried to get on the ballot for US Senate...to give you an idea of a few things I stood and stand for, you' ll see I'm quite a bit more aggressive on relevant issues that affect real people's pocketbooks and the economy:
1) We should be paying for the first year of Junior College for all US citizens
2) All student loans public and private should be capped at 3% interest rate
3) Interest should not be charged during deferments and forbearances and the grace period after graduation in hardship/unemployment should be extended.
4) I am for a Federal Ban on Fracking
5) I am for manufacturing cars here in the US like Tata Motors air compression engine car, creating jobs and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
All said, why in heavens name do the three hosts insist on an absolute bar on my calling into their show and being part of a Democratic discussion. If I call their shows, they refuse, 100%, to let me on the air. Part of the answer is because I opposed a Wall Street backed, major polluter backed, fake Democrat, Kirsten Gillibrand. If you don't believe the lobby money influence on her and Schumer then you just haven't read what I have on OpenSecrets.org, FEC filings, etc. I have also posted here "The Real Donations to Gillibrand" on her fracking, gas, oil, nuclear lobby money. And if you think Schumer is a saintly Democrat, then you didn't watch PBS Independent Lens, "Money, Power and the American Dream" where it shows how he sold out us progressives for Wall Street.
So the bottom line is, progressive talk radio is down to 6 controlling companies just like Randi Rhodes said...but she is part of the whole G-d complex deciding just who gets to call in and who doesn't when it goes against the Democratic Party even when someone is civil, professional and more liberal in general than the Party pick.

Wed Jul 02, 2014 at 8:20 PM PT: A couple comments, since I haven't logged in. Let me clear some things up. I stand for massive student loan reform...vs, Gillibrand who was taking money from Salle Mae PAC,.,I am antifracking 100%, vs Gillibrand taking Cheaapeake PAC money and both her and Schumer are for 'safe' Fracking. There's much more, but not for here. I've never ranted any more than any other progressive caller..the 'something else going on here' factor is that I have more in common with Bernie Sanders and even more liberal on some issues than him and more conservative on others. The 'progressive' talk shows have their own agenda and one of them is to never rock the boat for the most part of Democratic incumbents. That's what's going on here..very simple. Thom Hartmann has openly supported candidates that are challenging Republicans, but if someone is challenging a Democratic incumbent like myself, he switches gears and claims Louise, his wife's policy I'd NOT to cover anyone who has not won a primary...he blew me away the other day when he ranted about 1800 politics and how Adams started a temporary revolution which he views favorably, but the real fact is that Adams silenced, imprisoned and harassed media and journalists who were critical of White House policy. It was reversed by Jefferson but Thom never has admitted that what Adams did smacked of Obama/NSA/Snowden politics. The last time I called his show, his caller figured out it was me and she said,"oh, you're good" then click. I was critical of how much money from Wall Street Gillibrand and Schumer were dipping into on Ed Schultz Facebook page, and they proceeded to ban me forum there as well. Bottom line, the Party offers students to 'negotiate' better rates as their Bill. Not only won't this Bill ever pass, it is a slap in the face to students as a ridiculous premise. My platform was always to cap all student loans, public and private, at 3% interest, and to extend forbearance and deferment timeframes. If you want to attack me still after explaining this, so be it. I stand for equality and fair play; both Parties are severely compromised by Lobby money, NOT just Republicans. All the best.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Calling Clinton and Ferraro fucking whores pretty much did it.  She lost her show over it, too, so there was some satisfaction to be had.  Nothing she says is in any way relevant.

establishment cons (who she was jabbing at) to take a shot at her.

it wasn't on her radio show and it was just another time that some 'progressives' took their cues from the 1% and their protectors.

Randi got canned because the owners of Air America were Clinton backers. They breached her contract in firing her. hat she said, she said in the confines of a stand-up routing that was neither broadcast or televised.
If you believe she should have been fired for that, then you don't care much for free speech.
Randi is one of the only really brassy, take-no-prisoners people on radio today.
She isn't always right, something she admits. But she retracts when she is wrong, something you won't hear from the likes of Rush and Hannity.

Rhodes said what she said.  She was free to do that, and A/A was free to fire her for it.  Excusing it based on the venue, and spicing up the excuse with accusations of somebody being against free speech sounds like something the other side does.

        •  Nope. (0+ / 0-)

It was complete beach of contract. They were not allowed to can her for comments made on her own time. She was not broadcasting. She was at a private venue.
But then, you'd have to know something about the biz.

  •  I know nothing.. (10+ / 0-)

..about the radio show of Shultz & Rhodes, but I do get Free Speech TV, which sometimes shows Thom Hartmann doing his radio show.

Hartmann loves to take calls from people from all across the political spectrum.

I don't understand why he refuses to take your calls.

Not near enough to keep you off Thom Hartmann's phone lines.

    •  I don't think the diarist really understands how (0+ / 0-)

the radio shows work. you can't just call in to use their show for your personal microphone. you have to be on topic - even if you don't agree with the host...you've gotta a make a valid point.
I know Rhodes and Hartmann take callers who are from the opposite spectrum, in fact taking them over people who simply agree with the host.
My faves are Stephanie Miller, which can be live streamed via KTLK in LA, or you can watch it live on Current TV. That's 9-12ET, M-f. Later I'll tune in to Randi if I'm home.

As you say, there is something going on here. The diarist seems to have a bit of paranoia when it comes to the radio shows, and a lack of understanding of how politics work (you can't always get what you want). After all, her "positions" are not that radical.

  •  no one broadcasts on holidays (4+ / 0-)

There are very few listeners during the holiday season. I don't quite understand your rant but between Christmas and New years all goes to reruns or fill ins.
These people deserve some time off. Randi Rhodes is off half the time anyway, her fill in Nicole Sandler is much more knowledgeable.
If you call these shows and go on a rant to the screener can't blame them for not putting you on. Sounds like no one is progressive enough for you.

blowhards on the right who not only rarely take real calls but regularly use paid callers), but they still have the right to pick and choose.

if you wanted to talk about any of those points separately they would probably give you the time but if you're going to list a platform and take shots at their former and future guests when they're not there i'd say you won't have much chance.

  •  What? (3+ / 0-)

This seems pretty out there.  Why do privately owned entertainment media owe you a platform?

  •  You don't listen much then, do you? (0+ / 0-)

Hartmann is very intelligent and spot-on. He has some great guests.
Randi is a little brassier, but she will take calls without prejudice. As a matter of fact, she will take a call from a conservative before anyone else, and often has great debates with them. She's even won many over...the ones who see the light.
I'm not a big fan of Schultz as he is a lapsed Republican. And his bombastic style appeals to the young white male Rush Limbaugh audience.
If you want some really good political talk, mixed in with comedy, try Stephanie Miller. You can get her on KTLK, via livestream, or (even better) live on Current TV M-F, 9-12 ET. Bill Press before her is good too.
All I can say is, if you're not getting on it is possibly because you are not on topic. They don't take callers who just want to get on  and run the conversation. I've called in and been put on hold, never to make it on air. Time and segments are tight. And sometimes the topic can change right in the middle of a previous caller, so the comment you made to the screener is no longer relevant.
As I said, your rant makes me think you really don't listen much, nor do you understand how the shows work. Listen sometime and check the segments (each show starts at 6 past the hour, with breaks at least 4 times after that. You have to be willing to comment ON TOPIC, and have a conversation.
    Try it sometime.

I like Ed because he sticks up for teachers and working people. I don't care if he was a Republican, I like him. He also says very funny things. I listen to his show often.

I like Randi Rhodes too, because she covers some issues like Sandra Fluke, very, very well and she is also pretty funny, in an honest kind of way.

Thom Hartman is very interesting. I think his show is very good and I like how he urges people to become active.

  •  To be blunt (0+ / 0-)

The fact that you're whining here that these radio shows won't give you air time tells me you're not to be taken seriously as a candidate.

  •  Talk radio is an entertainment medium. (0+ / 0-)

If they're not taking your calls, it's probably because they don't think you'll contribute to making the show entertaining and, consequently, won't cause listeners to stick around.
If you want radio time to advocate for your chosen issues, perhaps you should contact the advertising department instead.
