It was forgotten in the wake of 9-11, but on 9-10 the Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said:

On September 10, 2001, Donald Rumsfeld gave a speech at the Pentagon where he stated:

“According to some estimates, we cannot track $2.3 Trillion dollars in transactions.”

“The adversary is closer to home, it’s the Pentagon bureaucracy.”

“In fact, it could be said that it’s a matter of life and death.”

Let me be clear that I am NOT trying to draw a parallel between the timing of Rumsfeld's statement and 9-11....this is NOT a 'CT' thing.

But, as the right revisits 'welfare queens' with 'Obama phones', I think it's a fair question to ask.

And, for that matter, where are the 12-18 BILLION dollars in shrink-wrapped hundreds that disappeared in Iraq?

More money for the Pentagon, CBS News Correspondent Vince Gonzales reports, while its own auditors admit the military cannot account for 25 percent of what it spends.

So, why are discussions of 'entitlement cuts' and chained CPI on the table when identifying waste in the Defense budget is clearly OFF the so-called table?

Seriously, WTF.

Are we to believe that Rumsfeld was just making shit up when he gave that speech?

No. He was 'on to something', and trying to make his name as a reformer of a bloated system. (I'm not defending him- I think he's a terrible person with self-serving  goals.) He was indeed 'on to something', but the events of the next day changed everything.

That said, why can't we revisit his words and take a good hard look at where all that money goes?

If 12 Billion fell off a truck in Benghazi, would the Republicans look the other way?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
