Or, Embarrassment & Quitting Don't Mix

A message to ALL quitters. You don't have to avoid GUS if you have a failed quit. We won't give you a bad time and we consider the failed quits as "practice" for the real quit.

I think it's safe to say we've all had our embarrassing moments over the years: childhood mistakes and misunderstandings, teenage errors in judgment, and plenty of misfires, false starts, screw-ups, awkward moments and worse as we navigate through our messy adult lives.

Even the most confident (or indifferent) among us has probably had words or actions we've wanted to take back, or situations we wish had played out differently. Even my sweet but slightly bubble-headed foster kitty Jack is not immune. Every so often he'll confidently launch himself into some precarious situation or another (jumping onto a very high surface is usually the culprit) and fail in a rather spectacular fashion, plopping back down on his butt or sliding down a slippery vertical surface, claws out but doing little to halt his tumble from near glory.

Scccrrrraaaaaaaaaape....THUD.

Oooohhhh, so close.

But then he always does this little thing that cracks me up, and also kind of inspires me. See, when he's in the throes of post-FAIL kitty embarrassment, he'll immediately bolt for a different location and start furiously sharpening his claws on something, full of purpose, with an expression on his fuzzy little face that practically screams "Dude, I totally MEANT to do that!".

And I kind of believe him. Jack has mastered the art of letting go of his embarrassment almost instantly, and redirecting his energy into something that, while not precisely a productive activity (oh, my poor, shredded wing chair!) is at least not dwelling on the recent mishap and not focused on beating himself up for something in the past that can't be changed. Perhaps it's because he's got the memory of a goldfish, but Jack's not one for dwelling...and we can learn from that.

Hanging onto a sense of embarrassment for our past failures or screw-ups is a completely unproductive emotion. Learn from mistakes, sure. Acknowledge your imperfections, absolutely. People are imperfect creatures; we all mess up on occasion! But harbor embarrassment or shame over something that literally happens to everyone? That's just a big waste of time and energy better spent on forward-thinking pursuits, and on enacting positive change in the moment and going forward. Letting go of shame or embarrassment relating to past mistakes frees you up to focus on being a better, happier, healthier you in the future. Sometimes, Kitty knows best.

Have you had some experience with the effects of smoking, and want to write a GUS diary or host an open thread? Please sign up in the Butt Can (Tip Jar), and name the day and time that works for you (AM, PM, late-night, early-bird...). Weekly GUS Diary Schedule (regular diarists featured in bold) is below; look at all those nice open slots just calling your name!

If you can spare a few hours, please consider hosting GUS. Not sure where to start? Just ask for help in the Butt Can (Tip Jar). Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story or provide an open thread and host for a few hours, that's cool too. We would be ever so grateful!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
