The Chicago Tribune reported today that Miguel Diaz has resigned as the United States' ambassador to the Vatican.  One of the names being floated as his replacement is Congressman Dan Lipinski of Illinois.  As a progressive committed to electing new and better Democrats, I think this would be an excellent appointment for President Obama to make.  We would get rid of one of Congress' worst remaining Blue Dogs and have a chance to elect a much more progressive Democrat to take his place.

Dan Lipinski has been a constant disappointment right from the start.  You might remember the way he got his seat in the first place.  During the 2004 election cycle, his father, William Lipinski, initially placed his name on the ballot and won the primary election, which was tantamount to victory in November. However, a few months later, Bill withdrew his name from the November general election ballot, announcing that he would retire at the end of his current term. At Bill's urging, state Democratic party leaders named his son, Dan Lipinski, to replace him on the ballot and he has been in Congress ever since.  He is a right-to-lifer, anti-gay, fiscally conservative.  In sum, a real Blue Dog in a state that really does not need to have any.  His district could easily elect a much more progressive Democrat if Dan is not on the ballot.  Join me in urging President Obama to appoint Dan Lipinski our ambassador to the Vatican.  Help give Illinois a chance to elect a new and better Democrat!!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

how about a former prosecutor who pursued the Church in child abuse cases? We have lots of those types in this country.

And in return Democrats get massive headaches with Catholics. I would like to win Ohio in 2016, would you? Also, not pissing off Latinos would be cool, too.

If "Ambassador to the Vatican" was some powerful post that would forever reform the practices of the Catholic Church, maybe you roll the dice like that. But for nothing but an empty "F-You!" to the Pope? No thanks.

sitting in an embassy abroad hasn't been even close to reality for a couple of decades. Not when SecState can punch up a video conference with all the parties at interest. All, or the vast majority of ambassadors are figureheads.

that appointing a Church antagonizer is all risk, no reward. Nothing would change, in fact the Vatican would simply refuse to meet with the Ambassador and s/he would simply have a 4 year European vacation on our dime.

The Vatican has repeatedly interfered in our electoral system. Especially when it orders its pedophile priests to instruct the sheeple how to vote (against Democrats). You think that those cardinals and bishops did that on their own? Hardly.

Why not return the favor? They've earned precisely that kind of scorn and statement.

The Vatican is currently led by The Rat, a creep (I am not even considering his nazi ties, if they were true) that protected pedophiles, who transfered them away from litigation, who hid and shredded docs, who ordered destruction of evidence, who controlled every aspect of child abuse litigation across the world. And we need to treat this asshole with respect and honor?

will have bupkus to do with who is ambassador to the Vatican. I assure you this is not a foreground issue here — although it might be if the appointee is someone who pursued church child abuse cases. That would work in the Democrats' favor because so many Catholics here have a jaded opinion of the hierarchy over this issue among many others.

Tens of thousands of boys and girls, tortures, sodomized, fucked, beaten, and if they dared complain, their treatment and abuse got worse.

What was the Rat's first response? to have his white collar storm troopers attack those who complained.

We'd be lucky if we could ship him off to another corrupt entity like the Vatican, but would be surprised if he'd go for it.

if he spent time there. Here, he's been learning political corruption at the feet of his dad and other Old Chicago styled pols. Imagine the education he'd receive by living near the Vatican, seeing political intrigue and corruption employed with a vengeance by folks that have 2000 years of practice in deceit, crimes, and true application of power.   It would put his current  feeble criminal efforts to shame.

Upon his return, we'd have someone so well trained, so evil, so effective, that we would be properly worried about his future plans.

        Vatican/Roman Catholic Church. Thanks!

Now if we can just convince American Catholics to walk out the doors and pull their money from this institution, the world may finally see its demise into the trashbin of history, where it belongs.

By the way, for those who will cry foul on my comment... I am talking about the institution, not the believers or their beliefs. I could call those out too, but that's another discussion. In America, we tolerate the right to worship and to have a place to do so. So why don't American Catholics just start their own churches and free themselves from being complicit in the corruption of the Vatican by continuing to prop it up?

  •  Great idea (0+ / 0-)

But I can't see why Lipinski would accept. At 46, he could easily stay in Congress for another 20 or 30 years. After four years in Rome, what would he do next?

  •  The fact that the United States of America (0+ / 0-)

not only recognizes the Vatican as a country but also sends an ambassador to it is proof positive that we have moved far beyond the wall of separation of church and state built so carefully by our founders.

Jefferson and Madison and the rest would be appalled at this, but it sure doesn't seem to bother the "original intent" crowd.

If Ireland had the balls to deconnect their ambassador relationship with the Vatican over the abuse issue, why can't the country with the SECULAR Constitution do it?

    •  Two points.. (0+ / 0-)

Papal sovereignty over Vatican City is a fact. Refusing to recognize that is denial, not rationality.

Sometimes it's as important to have an ambassador in place with folks we DONT approve of as it is with those we do.

      •  In case you hadn't noticed (0+ / 0-)

we don't have ambassadors to any other religious institution in the world, and we don't allow any other country that we send ambassadors to the right to veto our choices for that position.  In essence, the Vatican is the only place that is allowed to have a say over who our government chooses to be the ambassador, and they have exercised that exclusive right. Which means that our government allows a religious institution to tell us how to run our government.

So anyone who is chosen to be ambassador to the Vatican from the US is HANDPICKED by the Vatican itself and guarantees that this person will not have an unbiased approach to his job (there won't ever be a "her" ambassador to the Vatican).
