It almost didn’t matter to me what she said. I have driven by Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn countless times, and I have read a little about his incredibly brave and visionary activist work.
My introduction to Medgar Evers was a Rob Reiner film about his life, where his murderer, De La Beckwith, was played by a most profoundly disturbing and despicable James Woods. (I believe he garnered an Oscar nomination for his brilliant performance).
That was not Coretta Scott King, or one of MLK’s children up there yesterday, delivering the Invocation. (I notice mainstream America seems to find MLK’s family tolerable, the same way a white racist will often think “dang it, I do enjoy watching RGIII, I must admit, black though he is.”).
Moreover, that was not Medgar Evers’ widow giving a speech at a black church, or a commencement address at Bethune Cookman.
Nope, that was the slain civil rights hero’s widow, Myrlie Evers-Williams, speaking at the Inauguration of the President of The United States of America, in front of millions, the world watching and listening: the biggest stage.*
Yes, we have so much work to do, and so far to go.
But damn, have we come far!!!
I’m proud to be an American.
And yes, I will say it yet again: Barack H. Obama makes me want to be a better American…and a better man.
(Meanwhile, John Boehner makes me want to go get wasted).
*Ok, so maybe the Super Bowl is a bigger stage, where racist white folks will also watch and enjoy black folks performing for them, both during the game and at halftime!
Life is beautiful!
I also want to take this opportunity to thank whomever secured me a subscription to this great site!!!
I am still fighting the war on Christmas. You do realize, I hope, that Christmas doesn't go away. No! She retreats way up north, reassembles, licks her wounds, and prepares for a bold return next year, primed for a fight to the death! She is not defeated by the Russian winter that stopped Hitler. She is not fazed by the north pole. She is regrouping and preparing to come back stronger than ever with a surge next December!
I am extending my offer to donate all royalties from sales of Aldus Shrugged, through February 1st!!!
ALL ROYALTIES HAPPILY DONATED TO THIS SITE to keep up the good fight!
