Friday - and I need to stop leaving this sitting in the "draft" section...

Itzl AlertingAs you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here.  We care!

If you'd like to be part of the Itzl Alert Network, please leave a comment asking to join, or send us a message asking to join. We'd love to have you. The bigger our network, the less likely someone will be stranded all alone.

Every pixel a rant:

Gas prices skyrocketed from $2.96 to $3.49 overnight.

I thought the state law that prevented gas stations from charging less than 6¢ over wholesale only applied to gasoline. Nope - it applies to everything sold in Oklahoma.  All retail merchandise makes a minimum of 6¢ profit for every retailer in Oklahoma.  No wonder I do the bulk of my shopping 200 miles away in Texas.

And we pay taxes on all food, not just prepared foods.

Donut prices went up.

Stamp prices are about to increase again...

All the businesses want to make huge profits, but they aren't willing to pay their employees so the employees can spend money giving them those huge profits...Yes, I know, put that way, it sounds rather incestuous, doesn't it? Or Ouroborosian.

And you can't file your taxes electronically until January 30th, but they haven't moved the deadline back a month, so we have 1 month LESS tine in which to file our taxes!!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

I haven't been out to see what gas prices are doing around here. I was supposed to go out yesterday, but the bus never showed up, and by the time Caedy got that worked out and rescheduled I was too exhausted to actually go. So I stayed home and she and Bit went for groceries. Caedy and I may go to the library on Saturday however, just to get me out of the house for a bit. Which means I should work with Sophie with my walker today and see how she does. I don't have a dog sling or anything like Noddy has for Itzl yet. I'm kind of hoping she'll ride in the basket we'll see.

But yes, prices have in general gone up, and yet pay stays stagnant (Caedy got a .15 cent an hour raise at least, not that that buys a whole lot). And on the rare occasions that pay goes up very slightly, they pull your other benefits if possible, so you don't get ahead anyway. I've pretty  much given up on the whole 'get ahead' meme at this point. Right now I'm happy to be able to 'get by' instead.

a lot, I kind of didn't expect you to know gas prices.

But I was kind of stunned at the steep climb.  I think I know why it happened, too.

We have an election coming up and there's a vote to repeal the 6¢ rule on retail prices. Everyone is being as greedy as they can while they can, because if that 6¢ rule gets repealed, they'll have to really compete on prices.  Right now, they have a set bottom price they can't charge less than, with no upper limit.  Pull the bottom out from under them, and some stores think they'll have to drop prices, so they're grabbing as much profit as they can right now.

The price jump is just more obvious at the gas station since they put their prices up on huge signs, but I also noted it when I went to the donut shop this morning - they raised their prices (they didn't charge me the increase in price because I'm a "regular" - I buy the work donuts there every Friday), and when I stopped at the convenience store to buy a small carton of milk, all their prices were up, too - the 57¢ carton of milk I usually buy on Friday was 79¢ this morning. and I noted that their sodas went from $1.69 last week to $2.19 today.

And we'll see these higher prices until the election. And I have to roll my eyes here, because even if the 6¢ rule is repealed, it won't take effect until November, so they will still have to charge at least 6¢ more than wholesale prices until then.

After that, they can undercut as steeply as they want and we'll have loss leader items back in our state again. assuming we repeal the 6¢ rule.

by the end of the social security tax holiday.  My pension isn't eligible for a cola until I have been retired for 5 years, but I will be able to collect widow's benefits this year; it will all be going for continued health insurance, I'm afraid.

start getting Sophie used to the basket now. Use it as a bed, or place for her to sit beside you. Carry it around the house and outside so she gets used to it moving.  Then, when you go on the bus and to the library, she'll already be acclimated.

And I hear you on pitiful pay raises.  We have yet another year without pay raises, not even COL, and the "benefits" take a bigger chunk of our paycheck. I started this job with really good pay - almost middle class, and I've slowly sunk into poverty with it.  Had my employers kept up with the COL and pay raises, I'd have achieved middle class by now. That was the goal when I first took this job.

I'm really kind of pissed that I'll be retiring at poverty wages when that wasn't the goal, and I'm too old to change jobs or start over somewhere else.

McDonald's has put up a ceiling. Unless she gets promoted, which is unlikely as she's already a crew chief and has been told she won't ever be a manager because her contact dermatitis won't let her work grill, once she reaches $9 an hour, that's it. She won't get ANY more raises, no matter how long she works there or how well she does. So until/unless she finds a different job, she has no hope for a living wage.

Under normal circumstances it would mean the cold days are over, but with the crazy weather nowadays...Who knows?

Had a bone density test yesterday. Now I wait for the results.

Our Gov. had to back track on his killing the hospice program. But he's going ahead with closing our charity hospital and all the people have to go clear across town to go for treatment. I don't know how some of them will get there if they don't have transportation. Also the people who work there now are on their own finding other jobs.
    I almost hate that man!
