The Daily Bucket is a place where we can post and exchange our observations about the natural happenings in our neighborhoods. Birds, bugs, blossoms and more - each notation is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the natural patterns that are unwinding around us.
Seattle. January 26, 2013.
Flat grey light and a huge mixed flock of kinglets and chickadees all chipping and twittering 360 degrees around me. I stood for the longest time, watched until they all rushed upward in a wave of chittering feathers, a Sharp-shinned Hawk skidding through my peripheral vision. There was only the sound of wings on air, and this freeze-frame: a Chestnut-backed Chickadee furiously backflapping, feet straight out in front of him; the Sharpie, struggling to hold on to the one tight curve it needed to make impact, and failing.
January 26, 2013. The mixed winter flocks of little birds are still present in the Forest.
