The latest contender (for least plausible CT-ba) is a claim making the rounds about how John Brennan, Barack Obama’s nominee to head the CIA, secretly converted to Islam while he served in Saudi Arabia, and that he was recruited as an intelligence asset for foreign terrorists, to whom he passed government secrets!
Wonkette (of course)
Wonkette has sources, though. And guess what! The first link is to ... World Net Daily! I clicked it so you don't have to.
“Mr. Brennan did convert to Islam when he served in an official capacity on the behalf of the United States in Saudi Arabia,” Guandolo told interviewer and radio host Tom Trento.
“That fact alone is not what is most disturbing,” Guandolo continued. “His conversion to Islam was the culmination of a counterintelligence operation against him to recruit him. The fact that foreign intelligence service operatives recruited Mr. Brennan when he was in a very sensitive and senior U.S. government position in a foreign country means that he either a traitor … [or] he has the inability to discern and understand how to walk in those kinds of environments, which makes him completely unfit to the be the director of Central Intelligence.”
Wonkette tells us more about Mr. Guandolo in Wonkette-ese.
Is the guy, John Guandolo, credible? You bet! He’s an actual FBI agent! Well, former FBI, because before he became a fixture in the anti-Muslim-paranoia industry, he resigned from the FBI before he could be fired for sexytime with a witness in a case he was working. If you can’t trust a virile Patriot like that, who can you trust?
And Guandolo bases his story on unnamed (of course!) US Government officials who served in Saudi Arabia with Brennan, who was CIA station chief in Riyadh in the 1990's, when the notorious non-Republican Bill Clinton was President, which makes this story all the more plausible.
More below the Orange Squiggle of Power.
Now, just in case anyone reading this doesn't understand why this is crazy, let me 'splain something to you. Brennan didn't take some time off from the CIA after Riyadh. He has been working for them since the 1990's. And he's had a security clearance.
What do you suppose the odds are that he had a high level job with the CIA for 15 or 20 years and none of Guandolo's uber-patriotic sources saw fit to mention his treason until now ... and then, they decide to tell a guy who was fired from the FBI, and not, say, the people who still work for the FBI? Couldn't they trust the FBI when George W. Bush, Republican, was Presidenting all over the place and starting wars against random groups of Muslims?
I may have to take a break from snarking about Republicans. Like the Onion, I can't make anything up that they won't proceed to exceed.
