Donald Trump has a small thingy. (His overcompensation gives it away).  He wants America to continue to support small things.  And most importantly, he wants to use his massive amounts of money make others do so, even if by funding a candidate up to the $200 million dollar level now that there is no limit....

Senator Ted Cruz envisions himself as President some day.  He will need money.... Lots of money.  His own supporters (the former Tea Party) are poor.  The wealthy in his state do not like him so he can't count on Texas.  He will need a big donor when he makes his run.
Dick Durbin is up before Ted Cruz as a candidate for the President's Secretary of Defense.  "Dick" Durbin is rumored to be a member of the "Big" club because his wife is always smiling.

Ted knows, that if he is very hard on Mr Big (Dick Durbin), he will catch the eye of Donald Trump.  If he stymies Mr Big (Dick Durbin), he will get noticed even more.  Furthermore, Ted Cruz also knows some of his party compatriots, also have hard-ons for the presidency, and they also are planning on being anti-Big to get Donald's eyes as well.

Ted Cruz knows he has to be the biggest, baddest, Dick (Durbin) basher on the committee, if he wants Donald Trump to fund him through out the primaries, instead of funding another suitor....
Every Republican Senator tries to one-up the other when it comes to bashing Dick, and that, explains the irrationality of the entire hearing, the filibuster, and the vote.

The behavior was certainly irrational if one considers the state of the country, the lost election, the armed forces, the sequestration, the upcoming NATO meeting on the future of Afghanistan.  But it very rational, very rational indeed if you have no money and are looking for a Sugar Daddy to spread apart and open up your path into the Presidency....

Substitute Adelson, Israel, Chuck Hagel, and you finally have an idea of what exactly was going on with the Chuck Hagel hearing and vote.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

McCain let it slip.  He said "the ill will toward Hagel goes back to his saying the surge was the worst disaster since Viet Nam".  That was a NO NO.  Especially for old man McCain who has been relitigating the surge & Iraq for years.

McMain is carrying a grudge against Hagel because "he attacked George Bush mercilessly & said he was the worst President since Herbert Hoover".

Old man McMain hasn't gotten over it yet.

That's why Hagel is being filibustered.

The bit about Hagel speaking at the Arab American Anti-Discriminating Committee is a ruse.  Jim Inhofe is leading that charge which is hilarious.  In 2006, Inhofe loved Hamas.  He said "Hamas has done some good things".  He also compared Hamas "to the Salvation Army w/ loaded guns".  And...."I don't think it is the end of the world that Hamas won".

As for Hagel taking money from "Friends of Hamas", that BS came from a blog

  •  Sen. Cruz was compared to Joe McCarthy tonight on (0+ / 0-)

Chris Mathews Show.  I think he is on to something, he even resembles him a bit especially when he glares and acts like a devilish prosecutor.  Could he actually be a serious contender for president with this kind of reputation.
I can't wait for the day when the Democrats take over Texas and this jerk needs to face a real candidate.
