Our state republican party had their annual convention this morning in Lansing Michigan. We decided to use this opportunity to bring the issue of gun violence to their front door. They were not pleased. We had some good media coverage with WILX NBC10/Fox 47 news doing a newsclip. They ran it at 6:00.
Some of the attendees were vocal about the 2nd amendment. We replied that we believed in the 1st and the 2nd amendment. Others actually had a dialogue where I made the point that while we would not agree on everything, we could find some common ground. No one wants felons, domestic abusers and drug addicts to get guns. Closing the gun show loophole would help solve this problem. A Michigan pollster found 86% of Michigan likely voters favored closing the loophole.
We do not accept that nothing can be done to make it safer for our children and families in this country. We are better than this! Only by raising our voices and demanding action will our Congressional representatives and Senators act.
Please do your part wherever you live. If politicians and the media gather consider it an opportunity to show up with your banners, candles and songsheets. The Newtown survivors sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Let us remember them and put their hopes into action
