I found this Guardian article thru the Democratic Underground, and I thought I might share it with you:
It took Abraham Lincoln and others many years of campaigning to abolish slavery - but who are the contemporary figures fighting to abolish dangerous climate change?
Here we have a selection of climate change abolitionists, those engaging in an uphill battle to challenge the broken systems that threaten our survival. As you can see, we've left eighteen spaces blank - these are for your suggestions.
So this is basically an opprotunity to voice your personal opinion.....who should be allowed on here, in your view?
Well, I can tell you who definitely shouldn't be considered, under any circumstances:
1.)Guy McPherson-This guy isn't well known outside of the "doomer" circle but lemme tell you, this guy is a real fucking nut; erroneous and extremely holey claims such as his belief that we would see a temperature rise of 16*C by 2100(which is literally impossible, btw), and the claim that the human race would be extinct by 2030, are just a small taste of what to expect.
2.)Kevin Anderson-Might very well have deserved a spot on the list, had last year's Cabot Institute presentation not been so full of misconceptions, half-truths, and frankly, with a little outright baloney sprinkled in(about the only good spot was that he admitted that there was indeed hope for humanity).
3.)David Wasdell-Possibly best known amongst doomers for propagating the claim that a 1*C temperature rise would occur with every 20 ppm of additional carbon(which is total B.S., when you look at the record. We've seen an increase of about 110 ppm but only a .7-.8*C temp rise).
4.)Malcolm Light-A little more well known that the other three "doomer" wannabe prophets: Best known for the summer 2012 AMEG paper that claimed all life on this planet, including us(yes. they really said that!)would be extinct by 2050.
5.)Paul Chefurka-This guy's a little hard to describe....also a doomer, and a really strange fellow, too(as if most doomers weren't already a little wacky), and the only Canadian on this blacklist. Particularly notable "contributor" over at the DU's Environment & Energy section.
I've got mixed feelings about Jim Hansen and Richard Muller, personally:
Hansen's a good fellow but he's been awful prone to hyperbole(remember his "Venus Syndrome" comments in the Keystone XL briefing a little while back?), just as James Lovelock in his sunset years.....as for Muller, he does seem to have genuinely turned towards accepting climate change, but the fact that he does seem to still have ties with the oil industry has me a little concerned.
I'm also taking a liking to Andy Revkin as of late, but he needs to be tougher on Keystone, IMO, which is why I personally wouldn't nominate him(he does deserve props for having been involved with environmental issues for 30+ years, though).
And here's my opinion on who should be accepted(and who haven't been mentioned already:
1.)Peter Sinclair(aka GreenMan)
2.)James Wells(hello!)
3.)A. Siegel(another fellow Kossack)
4.)Katherine Hayhoe
5.)John Cook(founder of Skeptical Science)
6.)Lennox Yearwood
7.)Robert Kennedy, Jr.
8.)Bernie Sanders
So there you have it. Eagerly awaiting your opinions. =)
