Solid science education is the best inoculation against ignorance.
The Inoculation Project, founded in 2009 by hyperbolic pants explosion, is a group of Kossacks who gather weekly to combat the anti-science push in conservative America by providing direct funding to science and math projects in red state classrooms. Our conduit is, a twelve-year-old organization rated highly by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau. Here's a little introductory video about DonorsChoose. allows you to make direct contributions to specific, vetted projects in public school classrooms, resulting in tremendous and immediate impacts from small dollar donations. Each week, we focus on funding a single small-dollar project at a time, in a traditionally red state classroom and preferably in a high-poverty district.
Look for us every SUNDAY morning at 10 AM ET/ 7 AM PT.

This Week's Main Project
Project: Silly for Science!

Resources Needed: weather station, fossil kit, and materials to make terrariums
School Poverty Level: High
Location: Hebron Elementary School, Hebron, OH
Total Cost: $394.84
Still Needed: $194.84Completed!
Expires: Mar 11, 2013

Teacher's Comments from Ms. Clark:

My Students: Ohio just recently adopted the Common Core Standards and changed everything we've ever taught in second grade. We have no materials to teach the new standards and no budget to purchase new materials.

We are a rural high-poverty school in central Ohio. We are a Pre-K to 2nd Grade building with over 400 students in a 98 year-old building with little hope for getting a new one anytime soon. My students will be unprepared for science in the higher grades if I have no materials to teach them with.

My Project: My students are going to study life science by making individual terrariums, worm composting bins, soil comparisons and ant farms and fossils. The weather kit will help us to study and create our own weather tools for measuring wind speed and direction.

These materials will help my students develop the skills for systematic discovery to understand the science of the physical world, weather and weather changes and ecosystems. I hope to inspire a love a science in my students.

Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
We try to focus on the main project until it is completely funded, and then move on to the bonus project. If a project doesn't meet its funding goal by its deadline, it dies and any donations to it are referred to their donors to be moved to another project. For that reason, we don't like to split our sometimes limited resources between two open projects. Of course the choice of project to which you donate (if any!) is entirely yours.
Bonus Project #1
When the main project is finished, let's work on this one.
Project: Ready... Set...Grow!!!

Resources Needed:butterfly pavilion, frog habitat, root-vue farm kit, butterfly and frog life cycle stages posters, butterfly life cycle stages model, plant book and a butterfly craft kit
School Poverty Level: High
Location: Green Sea Floyds Elem School, Green Sea, SC
Total Cost: $235.73
Still Needed: $117.87 $54.87
Expires: Mar 15, 2013

Teacher's Comments from Mrs. Morgan:

My Students:We need hands-on experiences to help us bring more excitement to our learning.

My students are very energetic, eager learners. They are so excited about school and they deserve so much! Our school is located in a very rural part of our county and many of the families represented at our school are very high poverty. Often times students come to school without the basics.

My Project: I am requesting a butterfly and frog kit, life cycle sequencing games, life cycle viewers, and real live larvae! These materials will add so much excitement to our literacy unit, "Ready, Set, Grow." Having hands-on materials and being able to witness a frog and butterfly actually growing in our classroom would be so exciting.

This project is important because I can only imagine the smiles when our learning comes to life. Learning is so much more exciting when the kids can see real life examples and not just pages in a book. My kids deserve so much more than I can provide for them on my own.

Sandy Hook School Fund

Supporting Newtown Teachers is a special, open-ended DonorsChoose project designed to support all teachers in the Newtown, CT, public school system. It remains open to donations through June 30, 2013, at which time the fund will be distributed equally to all teachers in that system, for projects of their choosing. The project was organized by the Connecticut Commissioner of Education and the American Federation of Teachers. We will track it until completion.

The fund currently has $73,661 given by 792 donors.

Last week's main project, Are Frogs Like Humans?, was completed. Intermediate school students in Alabama will have the frogs they need for their dissection lab.

The bonus project, Hands-on Learning with Simple Machines, was completed wth a heavy Kossack assist. Elementary school students in Alabama will have simple machine sets that they can use to design and create working models that incorporate gears, levers, pulleys, inclined planes, screws, and wheels.

You can see the teachers' thank-you notes at the links above. Many thanks to all contributors!

When projects are not fully funded by their expiration date, donors are contacted by DonorsChoose and asked to choose another project to which to redirect their donations.

See our list of successfully funded projects. We're up to 291!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
