Years after President Obama promised to close that hell hole, the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba have begun a hunger strike, and it seems that it didn't start just recently. Some have lost "30 pounds or more" according to one lawyer who represents 15 of the men being held there.
Links galore after the squiggle thingy.
I first read of this at the news site RT, but they're funded by the Russians (damned commie pinko bastids!) and there are some folks who consider that site to be suspect. They may not be the AP or Reuters, but they're not exactly Pravda, either. So I looked around for confirmation from other news sites that folks would have less ability to question. Here you go:
CNN has a story about it. They claim 24 men on strike.
Al Jazeera is also reporting 24 prisoners on hunger strike.
RT is reporting 21 hunger strikers in Gitmo over conditions there.
HuffPo is using an AP article reporting 21 prisoners taking part in this.
CBS News has a very in-depth report. They're saying that other prisoners have reported (apparently through their lawyers) that 24 men are unconscious due to low blood-glucose levels.
It seems that the official spokesman for that place denied that the strike was at all wide-spread - claiming that only 6 men were participating. Check my link to RT for the details on that lie. It's disgusting.
Why is this place still operating? Why can't these men receive decent treatment? Why have there been no criminal trials?
That this is happening at all is bad. That MY COUNTRY is doing this disgusts and embarrasses me.
