"We can't tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end, and to end them, we must change. ... Surely we can do better than this.” - President Barack Obama, December 16, 2012
A mere three months after the Sandy Hook massacre, the spineless politicians elected to represent the American people but who pimp themselves out to the National Rifle Association have dropped an assault weapons ban from proposed gun legislation now before Congress. Their action, or more accurately, inaction should make true Americans blanch with shame and humiliation as well as redden with anger. The
fact that nearly four in five Americans support some gun control in some form and 62% back a ban on semi-automatic assault rifles and high-capacity magazine clips, matters not one whit. We have officially become the United States of the NRA.
It’s no secret how much blood money the NRA pours into lobbying for these weapons to be available in America. It’s no secret the NRA’s motivation to keep these weapons available has nothing to do with liberty or defense or their warped interpretation of the Second Amendment and everything to do with lining the pockets of America’s gun manufacturers who in turn buy advertising space in the NRA’s publications. It’s no secret that so many politicians turn into quivering pants-wetting cowards in the face of the money and power of the NRA. Now it has been revealed as well that our current congress is the weakest, most gutless legislative body in America’s history, who'd rather hoist a white flag than take a brave stand. Thank God this Congress wasn’t around in 1941 or we’d all be speaking Japanese with a German accent.
For a few moments, after President Obama spoke those words recalled above at a vigil for the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School, one wanted to believe that maybe this time things really could be different. Maybe the senseless slaughter of twenty innocent children could finally be the catalyst for something more than just the inexpressible grief and agony of their families. But, no, it was merely the same old Washington bullshit, the same old song and dance in the United States of the NRA.
Shame. Shame on every member of that craven, cowardly body. The blood of future victims is already on their hands.
