This is no surprise to me. A couple of months ago, I was polled, rather obviously by the prospective candidate himself. Then last week, I was approached after a forum by a guy claiming to be a journalist from a major magazine, but not displaying a press pass.

And what they all wanted to know was whether I thought Anthony Weiner should run for mayor. Well, he seems to have made up his mind, and in true Weiner fashion, it's a definite maybe.

Has he done sufficient penance for the sophomoric antics that caused him to resign his House seat? Were those antics worse than the corruption issues that dog most of the current candidates (and seemingly every other politician in NYC these days)?

I'm still undecided which candidate I'm supporting, so having another choice is fine with me; how about you?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

And Mayor of NYC is not the best position.

Back to congress maybe in a few years.

But this keeps his name in the news, so it is good for him.

    •  In fact, it's his dream job. (6+ / 0-)

And has always been. And it's the job he's "threatened" to run for three times now.

He was a hairbreadth away from running four years ago, when he would have been the clear favorite for the nomination, but Emperor Bloomberg made it clear that he would spend whatever it took to bury him. This is a threat no one takes lightly.

I'm honestly not sure whether he has the appropriate skill set for it, given his rep for not working & playing well with others, but I'm not terribly happy with the choices I have, so one more is fine with me.

  •  I hope he runs so that the baggers' heads explode (6+ / 0-)

It was because of the racist teabaggers being so judgmental and hypocritical that he was forced to resign.

He has nothing to be ashamed of.  The anti-sex teahadists are so sexually repressed, it's not even funny.

  •  Am not sure I can bear all the (5+ / 0-)

jokes that are beginning to surface. Think he shoujld run. The current crop of candidates is very depressing. Whether he will win is another story.  Not sure how his wife, a Muslim and an aide to Hillary, will factor in.
It's been a long time since NY has had a good mayor. Somebody on the bus yesterday said that the last good mayor was LaGuardia.

    •  If the jokes take over (4+ / 0-)

I bet he doesn't. It'll be all over the late night shows and Comedy Central this week. If it goes further than that, it's still a problem.

I'd think that Huma could only be an asset, but I'm not at all sure she has the stomach for this, especially considering that a large part of her job would be "stand by your man". OTOH, she's got just about the perfect coach for that.

Somebody on the bus forgot Koch's first term. Unfortunately, Koch's last term made it easy to forget his first term.

        from the linked article:

[Weiner] is quoted recounting what people say to him on the subway.

“It’s one of the following,” he said: “1) ‘Oh, you should run.’ 2) ‘Man, you got screwed.’ 3) ‘Aww, I’m so sorry what happened to you.’ 4) ‘Spitzer! You’re Governor Spitzer!’ ”

Barring any new nonsense, I would probably vote for him. The other candidates mostly leave me cold or worse. As you point out, his scandal had nothing to do with political corruption. Hopefully he's now learned the difference between a private tweet and a public one.

that Huma cancelled his Twitter account. Permanently.

Unlike the other candidates' scandals, his didn't break the law. There were people here who felt he shouldn't have resigned because of that factor, but I think the embarrassment was probably just too much for him/them.

to remind people he was a serious person before all that tweeting was revealed. On the other hand, it's mayor of New York -- if there's anyplace that has more interest in whether someone can do the job, that would be the place.

I'm sad that I can't like Quinn for it, but it just goes to show that people are more than their big cartoonish label. "Openly gay woman" sounded so good, back when; alas.

it didn't do wonders for Spitzer, and I'm not so sure that Weiner's appeal would be any greater than his.

I, too, am terribly sad about Quinn. Not only because I would have liked so much to back an openly gay woman but can't, but because it's going to split the progressive community.

If my choice is between her and a Republican, I'll vote for her. But that's it.

        •  that's only one of several reasons. (0+ / 0-)

A bunch of the Brooklyn reform Dem clubs,  including mine, held a forum a couple of weeks ago, with all five Dem candidates, and she did not improve her position at that event. Defensive on member items, and had the nerve to  compare NYC term limits with CA misgovernment by direct vote(because term limits were also instituted by referendum). That drew a lot of negative noise from the crowd, but it ended with her partisans chanting "Prop 8!"Prop 8!". Like marriage equality is just the same thing as overturning a law that had been in place for decades, for the benefit of one person. Not pretty.

I'm glad to see you here. I hope things are getting a little better for you.

My sister lived in his district and said that his office was the best in terms of being responsive to constituent calls and concerns. That tells me that he can organize an efficient office staff and that he didn't forget who elected him, in contrast to those elected officials who get confused as whether their constituents are people who actually live in their district, or those who paid to get them elected.
