Addendum for April 10, 2013
This daily carnage will never end unless we take a stand. And if ever there was a day to take a stand, it’s today. That’s because the U. S. Senate is taking up the gun-control issue this week. If we miss this opportunity, another one might never again come along. And the carnage will go on and on and on.
So Washington needs to hear from us -- today. If we don’t speak out, they will only hear the voices of the N.R.A.

NRA TACTICS ERODE POST-NEWTOWN SUPPORT FOR GUN-CONTROL MEASURES
http://www.washingtonpost.com/...
The N.R.A. continues to strike fear in Washington, even though the organization represents a minority of Americans. Indeed, a recent Pew Research/USA Today poll showed that more than 83 percent of Americans want background checks for all gun buyers, 56 percent support a ban on assault-style weapons, and 53 percent want a ban on high-capacity magazines.
Senators Begich and Blumenthal need to hear from us -- the majority. Tell the senators you support common sense gun control laws.
And tell them this, too: I DON’T support the N.R.A. -- and I vote.

From today’s New York Times:
UPSTART GROUP PUSHES HARDER THAN THE N.R.A.
“Springfield, Va. — When word surfaced in February that Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma, was plotting with Democrats on a bill to expand background checks for gun buyers, Larry Pratt got really mad. Then, Mr. Pratt, the executive director of Gun Owners of America, got busy, mounting a lobbying blitz that helps explain why a bipartisan Senate deal on background checks remains elusive.
Within days, his staff, working from a nondescript space in a squat office building off the Beltway here — there isn’t even a nameplate on the door — was on the phone with supporters of his organization in Oklahoma. The group’s members were encouraged to inundate Mr. Coburn with e-mails and calls and to otherwise make it exceedingly clear to the senator that an enhanced background check law would not be tolerated.
It wasn’t long until Mr. Coburn, a gun rights advocate, had backed away from negotiations with Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York, the No. 3 Senate Democrat, securing at least a temporary victory for gun rights activists and frustrating advocates of new gun safety laws. “
So that’s what we are up against.
If anyone -- especially Oklahoma residents -- wants to tell Senator Coburn that you support common sense gun laws, you can email him here:

And keep sending him an email every week until he gets OUR message.

A lobbyist for an NRA chartered organization in Wisconsin recently said gun-rights proponents need only wait-out the “Connecticut effect” before they can once again start passing laws to loosen restrictions on guns. The lobbyist thinks we will soon forget what happened at Sandy Hook, and that those of us who want common sense gun laws will eventually lose interest and fade away. Then the NRA will have our elected representatives all to themselves, just the way they like it.
I think that lobbyist and the NRA need to know that this time is different. This time we are not going away.
Please help. Call, write, email, or FAX your representatives in Washington, D.C. and tell them to support common sense gun controls. Do it today. And do it again next week. And then every week after that until they get the message.
