To all Kossacks:  Please take note that these Congressional District Information Diaries are not meant to evaluate whether or not the districts are beatable.  They are meant for Kossacks and others to share information on any knowledge they have on the districts.

There have been recent Congressional District Information diaries where Kos user comments are talking about "how this person will never be beaten," or "even a scandal wouldn't change anyone's minds."  To be frank, we're not looking for this kind of feedback.  We want real, inside information about the Congressional Districts we cover in our diaries.  Ballotpedia and Wikipedia have very little information available.

We'd like to reach out to any of you Kossacks from California's 50th Congressional District for information.  Feel free to add your understanding of the communities, issues, etc.

This isn't going to be much of a diary.  You can add anything you want about California's 50th Congressional District.  Keep in mind this diary is just for information purposes.  Let's not get too carried away with whether or not any of these Knowledge Democrats information gathering diaries mean the Congressional districts in questions are winnable by Democrats or not.  Were here to assess districts across the country, no matter how "deep reed" or "red" or Republican-occupied they are.

What issues directly affect people in California's 50th Congressional District?  My colleague Augustin and I are working on the Knowledge Democrats project and I've started working on a wiki page for California's 50th Congressional congressional district in order to assist in our long term efforts to promote progressive candidates in that district, whether at the local, state or federal level.  We understand California's 50th Congressional District may in fact be trending more toward Democratic territory (more registered Democrats than Republicans) due to redistricting and we're looking to reach out to any Kossacks, Democrats or progressives in the area.  It helps for long-term planning.

We also know that the current representative of the district is Congressman Duncan D. Hunter, no more or less pro-military than his father but very anti-immigration and really kind of a drone.

Also, taking politics out of the equation, let others know if you've been to the 50th Congressional District and can point out some good restaurants, venues and places to spend time in there.

So far, I only have the basic information. What issues should be documented? What important links / articles / information should be added to the wiki page?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

fathers name. Most people here probably didn't even realize his dad had retired.

The people from this area will vote for the Republican no matter what, they don't care if he's a crook, Randy "Duke" Cunningham, or a squatter, Brian Busby who didn't actually live here.

After redistricting I'd say we've gotten redder not bluer. Most of the district is now east of Escondido, not west. It's rural.

not so long ago, I'd have to say no real chance barring an unforeseen scandal or the like (though there should be a Dem opponent anyway just in case something comes up).

My house in SW Escondido got moved into the district (was in Bilbray's).  To win here you'd need to wait for the demographics to change (will probably not happen in my lifetime and I'm only 51) or have the boundaries changed.  I don't even think a Todd Akin like gaffe would matter here with the makeup of East County.

The good news is the redistricting got Bilbray booted - I suspect he would have been re elected in the other district.

    that part of the county.

Yeah, there are some good things probably there, but the rednecks and wingers keep me away.  This is Tom Metzger country.  I grew up near there, and would not be at all surprised if the Klan group that used to exist there were still around.

The only reason to go to that part of the county for me is the Wild Animal park (yes, I know they changed the name - I just don't like the new name).  And as the Zoo is walking distance from home, it really isn't much of a draw.

I am not religious, and did NOT say I enjoyed sects.
