I sent this guy a letter months ago about the Firearm Safety Act of 2013.  And this is his face-palm response.

ARGH!

For the record, I was polite in my initial correspondence to this tool. But now the gloves are off.  I don't feel the need to be deferential or polite to him in this diary.

Just sayin'.

Dear Constituent,

Thank you for contacting me in regards to SB-281-Firearm Safety Act of 2013.  I have always been a strong proponent of protecting our constitutional rights as well as not imposing further restrictions on gun use.

ME:  Okay, already I can see that this can only end badly.  You obviously didn't give a rat's damn about anything I said in my letter. Not surprising. You're as tone deaf as the NRA.
Recent gun related tragedies such as the event in Connecticut have made this a very emotional issue.
ME:  Emotional?  You haven't seen emotional.  This isn't about emotion, senator.  It's about common sense, something you seriously lack.
Unfortunately there has been a rush to push more gun control legislation rather than a careful review of the root cause of these horrific events.
ME:  * * *ch, please.  What rush?  We've been talking around this issue for decades.  If a bunch of babies and innocent teachers getting sliced to pieces by assault ammunition isn't enough to open your eyes, then you're beyond hope.  So I guess it's on to plan B.  VOTE YOUR ASS OUT when the elections come.
I share your views and concerns on further gun control legislation...
ME:  BZZZZZZZZ! Wrong.  You know why?  Because if you'd actually read my letter, you wouldn't have included that stupid line in your canned response.
....and have been working this entire Legislative Session to express these concerns to my colleagues and gun control advocates.

ME:  You're so full of cow manure that I couldn't help but hold my nose while reading your steaming bovine droppings.

Knowing the legislation had the votes to pass the Senate by a large margin, I met with the St. Charles Sportsman's Club as well as meeting with NRA representatives to gain their insights on how to amend the bill on the Senate floor.

ME:  Gaining their insights?  What possible insights are there to gain from these people?  They've been selling the same noise since forever.  What possible reason did you need to meet with them? You're just like them, so any meeting was a waste of tax dollars.  I want whatever portion of my money back that you spent in that stupid meeting.  Even if it's 000000000000000.1 of a penny.  GIVE IT BACK!

We were successful in getting several amendments adopted to:

--Remove the licensure requires of the bill

ME:  Oh, that's freaking lovely
--Reduce the licensure fee from the original $100 fee to $25.
ME:  Yeah, good job making it much easier for lotty dotty and every damn body to get a firearm.
Reduce the training requirement from 8 hours to 4 hours.
ME:  WTF?  ARE YOU SERIOUS?
Provide credit for prior gun safety training.
ME:  Even if the training happened a gazillion years ago?
Remove thumbhole stock from the definition of assault weapons.
ME:  I have no idea what this is, but since you're advocating it, I'm sure it's something bad.
I also voted to reduce any penalties associated with this bill and most importantly I voted against the legislation.
ME:  And I'll return the favor when you come up for reelection.  I'll also vote AGAINST YOU.
Unfortunatley, as you know the bill passed the Senate 29-19.
ME:  Muahahaha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
I am now hopeful that the House of Delegates will either defeat the measure or continue to work on amendments to lessen the impact of the legislation on law abiding citizens.
ME: What do law abiding citizens need with 2 billion cartridge magazines (yes, I'm exaggerating, but you get the message) and assault rifles, sir?  I'm a law abiding citizen and a gun owner, and I still think you're an idiot.

I CAN'T WAIT TO VOTE YOU OUT!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Some "assault" weapon laws have a grudge against rifle grips that have separate areas for the shoulder and the hand. Never mind that such areas became popular because they don't bend the wrist unnaturally and make it less likely to aggravate arthritis or bursitis.

So when such rifle grips got prohibited by "assault" weapon laws, manufacturers redesigned things to keep the ergonomic benefits. Thus was born the thumbhole stock, a one-piece stock that has the horizontal shoulder mount and still keeps the more vertical grip area near the trigger that takes it easy on arthritis and wrist injury.

ERGONOMICS! It's used for more things than just office desks!

So, a thumbhole stock is not something bad.

When I write to my state legislator (one of whom was a close high school friend) I assume they get few letters and I expect a personal response.  I've never written about a hot button issue though.  This tells me that the NRA had some massive letter - email writing campaign that got a pat response.
