I called Rubio's Miami office today to ask why he favored filibuster over debate on the gun control issue. The first answer I got from his aide was that he felt like the proposed legislation was only a band-aid. I said, "Well, lets say my front yard was full of nails and I had to walk across it every morning to go to work. If I punctured my foot, I'd want a band-aid, even if the nails weren't going anywhere any time soon."
She didn't have a comeback, so she asked me what exactly my question was. I told her, "My question is why did Senator Rubio prefer to filibuster the gun control law debate rather than let it be heard and voted on on the floor of the Senate?"
Her response was (lol, get this) "The filibuster is perfectly legal and is a part of the Senate rules."
My immediate thought was. "Sugar, I took Civics in 8th grade, back before there were dinosaurs, ya know??" But I didn't say that. Instead I said, "Well, there are a lot of things that are legal that I don't do. If the legality of filibustering was his reason, why doesn't he filibuster every piece of legislation?"
She didn't have an answer and put me on hold so she could find out. I had work to do, so I hung up. I've called Rubio's office at least six times in the past few months. Each time they've told me they'd mail me the answer to my question. Guess how many pieces of mail I've gotten from my esteemed Senator. (If you say zero, you're absolutely dead on!)
