The inability of the US Senate to pass basic legislation on background checks.

This is not about the filibuster.
This is not about Harry Reid
It is not about RWNJ's
It is not about liberals
This is not about the super-majority needed
This is not about conflicting amendments

This is about the voice of the people being totally ignored.
Think about it -
When was the last time elected government officials - listened to the people.

Think about it -
We use to be a representative government, of, for, by the people.
That has changed folks

It doesn't matter if you are a Democrat, Independent or a Republican.
It's time to wake up, people - real people, homo-sapiens.
Take the damn blinders off, folks and see what is really happening.

ALEC started this 40 years ago by intentionally bringing corporations into the political process.

ALEC started this 40 years when they told corporations -
"Hell, Yes!  Come on in" -
"Write legislation" -
Buy legislators scholarships and our ALEC legislators will take your corporate legislation back to the states and the US Congress to implement - just for  the price of a scholarship.

ALEC started this 40 years when they told corporation-
"You - the corporations need more control of the government."

This is not just about the NRA.
This is about Monsanto, Comcast, AT&T and other corporations also.

This is about known ALEC corporate members controlling our government officials at the state and federal level.
This is about known ALEC corporate members controlling the flow of legislation through our state and federal government.

This is about corporate profit.
This is about CORPORATIONS controlling our government.
This is about fascism.

The American Legislative Exchange Council is directly responsible for the destruction of representative government - of, for, by the people.

40th Birthday
ALEC will be celebrating their 40th Birthday Party and Annual meeting in Chicago
August 5 - 7.

We need an organizing committee for the peaceful protest / resistance.
The black shirts are already starting to organize for ALEC's birthday party.

I am in Minnesota - and will help as best I can - as will other members from the Daily Kos Abolish ALEC group
I'm willing to travel to Chicago/Milwaukee in April, May, and June - to do multiple ALEC educational sessions (I currently do them in the Metro area) for religious organizations, unions, and other interested groups.   I am always available through Kosmail to do ALEC educational sessions.

BUT - we need people to step up
and start the planning process
and organizing multiple groups to work together
and take the reins and be responsible
and organize in Chicago.
(I have one Chicago contact who wants to help.)

Are you that person???
Can you help?
Is there a a group of you that can start working on this?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

starting home of the group - the initial organizational meetings.

As hard as I have tried - and I have tried, because of his policies - I can't link Rahm to ALEC.   BUT, I bet my last dollar they have contacted him to be a keynote - and I bet he accepts.

  •  MNDem999, it was only 2 years ago that the (6+ / 0-)

first ALEC protest was done in Cincinnati.  It was very difficult to find ALEC on the internet, a Google Search on ALEC brought up thousands of hits about Alec Baldwin.

Since light started to shine on ALEC, and we cannot ignore the fact that University of Wisconsin professor William Cronon, (Scholar as Citizen Blog) got the ball rolling with an op-ed in the NYT and another article, and Kossaks such as ManfromMiddletown, the diarist MNDem999, Bob Sloan, Hector Solon,CincinnatiBengali, Mentatmark,Ron1951 and many others, are working day and night to take it to ALEC and expose their anti-democratic activities.

Today, if you Google "American Legislative Exchange Council" you get 4,600,000 hits.  This is progress, we have ALEC on the run because it is really hard to defend the indefensible with a series of clichés (small government, federalism, Jefferson (Jefferson must be spinning in his grave to have his name used in this manner), capitalism).  Of course ALEC uses these terms in their press releases, but this is subterfuge, mis-direction from their real purpose, which is to dominate our statehouses with the purpose to advance the economic interests of their Corporate members, and nothing else.

They use state legislators to deny citizens their day in court, to deny citizens their right to vote, to advance the interests of factory farms, to get someone who takes film or photos of animal cruelty on factory farms to be designated "terrorists", to pass anti-immigration bills (SB 1070), to privatize our prisons for profit, to pass throw away the key laws for criminals, to privatize our schools, municipal services, parks and anything else that isn't nailed down.  They advocate against environmental law, they push and have been successful in passing anti-labor laws (Right to Work in Indiana), SB5 (overturned by the voters) in Ohio, anti-collective bargaining in Wisconsin and Michigan, and it goes on and on.

So, keeping the pressure on ALEC in Chicago is just another step in the evolution of running ALEC out of our statehouses.  ALEC, like a cockroach, hates the light, and it is our job to shine a  10 million candlepower klieg light on them today, tomorrow, and especially in Chicago.

We want to have a peaceful and large demonstration in Chicago.  The anarchists who tend to be violent have already got this event up on their website, and I want nothing to do with them.  They don't do the kind of activism that I want to be associated with.

    •  Keeping the pressure on ALEC in Chicago .... (5+ / 0-)

      that is the key!

When you folks - all of you, worked on and participated in the Cinci protest - that was a historic moment.  That protest planning started here on DK on April 2.  Without that protest - ALEC would still be in the shadows - it was monumental - historic.

I was in Phoenix, the black shirts were in Phoenix.  They were on one part of the block - I was on the other, down from me was a church group.  All groups  co-existed - with at least one shared purpose, ALEC.  And the question would be - do we want peaceful demonstration to be the focus?  To do that we need more peaceful demonstrators, than the black shirts have on their side - It is a matter of being there, showing up.  I refuse to let the black shirts take over the dialogue and the action.

Today I found the following in a notice from Common Caus and LWV in Las Cruces NM

The goal of the two presentations about ALEC in the Las Cruces area is to raise awareness about the organization and reach a large local audience.  Neither NM Common Cause nor the League of Women is opposing or supporting the work of ALEC.
The nonprofits who are working on exposing ALEC are not going to destroy ALEC.  The nonprofits stance is neutral and as citizens who are seeing our representation destroyed, ALEC "model legislation" by ALEC "model legislation" we have to stop this.

Exposing ALEC is not sufficient - as far as I am concerned and my focus is ALEC has to be DESTROYED.

      •  Peacefully destroyed. Go after their 501(c)3 (4+ / 0-)

status.  Make them pay taxes on their ill-gotten funding.  Take their funders tax exemption on money sent to ALEC away.  Make them pay taxes on it.

Make our legislators disclose ALEC legislation, who the legislation benefits economically, and specifically, who it hurts.  Make the public and private Task Force Members public knowledge and part of the legislative record.  Make ALEC Task Force meetings open to the public and the press, all press.

Make the motivation behind each piece of "Model Legislation" known, beyond the platitudes and pabulum put out by ALEC and its surrogates/lackeys.  That is the job of the Democratic legislators in each and every statehouse.  ALEC can't live in the light, we need to shine the light.  They are also like an anaerobic bacterium, a stinking organism that puts off nasty, sometimes flammable gases, but dies when it is exposed to oxygen.  We need to be the oxygen for these creatures, hidden in the crevices and bowels of our legislatures and K Street.

It is time for us to crank up the rhetoric and metaphors that more correctly describe this corrupt, and corrupting influence on our state's body politic.

  •   I have plans to be there in Chicago and VLTP (4+ / 0-)

will contribute funding for the planning and events to "welcome" ALEC back to their birthplace.

Thanks for putting this in terms everyone can understand and relate to, MNDem999.

This should be a large event attended by all who now know, understand and object to ALEC and their activities.

Planners, organizers contact me through DK mail with information and what is needed and if it is available, I'll get it to you.

As you noted, many of the "Progressive" groups continue to chase ALEC but fail to have the desire to abolish them.  Why hunt a predator if you don't intent to eliminate it?

  •  Can someone rescue this? Its important T&R (5+ / 0-)

    Hotlisted too.

Going to send this to some of the others in the small group of people in my area who are active here in Wi.  We have been following  ALECs path of destruction, and have participated in some local info events, and trying to get the word out.

Again, thanks for all you do.

    •  Thank you! I appreciate your hlep (4+ / 0-)

      and sentiments.

I think it's really important also, to start planning now.
And I know that a the logistics of a protest in Chicago will be time-consuming.  I want a presence - but I don't want us in jail or thrown off the streets, ten minutes after we arrive on scene..

And I know that a the logistics of a protest in Chicago will be time-consuming. Getting multiple groups educated on ALEC and mobilized in a common cause will take time.

I appreciate that you are willing to help look for people of interest in your area.

      Very appreciated.  Thank you.
