Former Green Bay Packers safety LeRoy Butler was scheduled to give an anti-bullying presentation at a Wisconsin church. The church then learned he had sent out a tweet congratulating Jason Collins and cancelled his anti-bullying presentation.
In the article, the former Packers safety said what bothered him the most was:
"This is what bothers me the most. They said, 'If you ask for forgiveness and remove the tweet and you say something to the effect that you don't congratulate (Collins) then we'll let you do the engagement and get the speaker's fee, and I said I'm not doing that," Butler said Wednesday.
He also
sent out a series of tweets explaining what happened.
Also, LeRoy Butler told the church pastor
“This is a form of bullying, what you’re doing. ‘You’re trying to get me to do something I don’t want to do,’ ” Butler said. “He disagreed, and I said, ‘We agree to disagree’ and he said, ‘No, I’m right and you’re wrong.’ ”
The articles note there was a contract regarding the scheduled speaking engagement, but the contract had a "morality clause" the church used to get out of it??
The last tweet is the church apologized and thanked him for not releasing the church name?
I'm thankful not all church's are like that, but way too many are! Many churches will advertise that all are welcome, but this often means accepting you for who they think you should be, not who you are. Guess there are a lot of church's that should read Stephanie Spellers book "Radical Welcome: Embracing God, The Other, and The Spirit of Transformation. I've read it and its an excellent book!
There are a lot of welcoming congregations!
