As I sit here and watch nonstop coverage of the anarchists and protesters rioting in downtown Seattle tonight, snarling traffic and destroying property, I am left with the only questions... Why aren't these kids at work, or on their way home for the day? Instead they're out in the streets throwing water bottles, rocks and burning flags. What would drive them to do that?
And I just can't help but to draw a connection to the jobs situation in this country. When are we going to start investing in the people and families by creating living-wage jobs? When is it going to be as important to address the long-term unemployment deficit as it is the budget deficit? When are these kids going to feel like they have a promising future and they don't need to fight the system and break things?
With financing costs at an all time low, I'd say now is the exact time we need to make a bold investment in the future of this country. The future of this country is out on the streets of Seattle, throwing skateboards, punches, rocks and smoke bombs.
