Welcome to Thursday Coffee Hour. This is an open topic thread so help yourself to the goodies and sit a spell and let us know what is new with you. I think we have all grown up with sayings that are short and to the point and very apt. Many quotes we hear today came from Poor Richard’s Almanac written by Ben Franklin and published from 1732 to 1758. Some of the most often heard quotes from the almanac are:

·    They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
·    Eat to live, and not live to eat.
·    Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.
·    He that lieth down with Dogs, shall rise up with Fleas.
·    God helps them that help themselves.
·    The worst wheel of a cart makes the most noise.
·    Does thou love life? Then do not squander time; for that's the stuff life is made of.
·    The cat in gloves catches no mice.
·    To err is human, to repent divine; to persist devilish.
·    People who are wrapped up in themselves make small packages.
·    Silence is not always a Sign of Wisdom, but Babbling is ever a folly.
·    A good example is the best sermon.
·    An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
·    We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.
·    There was never a good war or a bad peace.
·    It's common for Men to give pretended Reasons instead of one real one.
·    Doing an injury puts you below your enemy; revenging one make you but even with him; forgiving it sets you above him.
·    Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor liberty to purchase power.
I was thinking of something I heard from my parents the other day. “I think you bit off more than you can chew.” What brought that to mind was this picture called Wanna Race?

What are some other sayings have meaning for you?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
