Take the premises

1] That congress is less popular than pond scum.
2] That you must be seen to be holding partisan lines firmly by your base.

How do you pass legislation?

Well you can put together a piece of legislation [preferably proposed by an "independent" committee] that everyone in congress can say is obviously stupid even though there are things in it that both opposing sides like.

You can then apparently fight like crazy about taxes, cuts, cuddly toys and winged pigs,

Then when you have satisfied the base you can hold up your hands and deny any responsibility whatsoever when the legislation comes into effect.

Government by denial.

You can of course repeal anything that annoys you personally and make a lot of noise about repealing sections that may be infuriating your friends.

Phew, saved from any consequences, hell we cant get any less popular and we cannot be blamed because we all said it was silly. Woot! Now we can get back to posturing.

Could this be the new way of governing? Having your cake and eating it, then spitting out the crumbs in faux outrage.

You can always fall back to the old gold standard of just lying about how you supported a piece of legislation but voted against its implementation, and just hope everyone was asleep at the time. For example; background checks.

You can still vote to give the president war powers and then say afterwards that you never thought he would use them without asking for permission a second time.

You can still waste time in creating and then voting upon legislation that you know has no chance of ever becoming law.

However, this new methodology would allow you to posture much more successfully and avoid nasty things like actually having a voting record on specifics.

Men are so simple and so much inclined to obey immediate needs that a deceiver will never lack victims for his deceptions.
Niccolo Machiavelli
Entrepreneurs are simply those who understand that there is little difference between obstacle and opportunity and are able to turn both to their advantage.
Niccolo Machiavelli
If by some miracle it turns out that it actually works; you can still take the credit.

Win, win.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

But the way you lay it out makes it VERY plausible.

    Have they no shame?

        No tin foil detected.

After awhile, we'll get used to it.

It'll be the norm. We'll be thanking them for not cutting as much as they originally told us they would. Or something.

we can use reference this horseshit now. So that's a positive, I guess.

BTW, either you're back to writing more frequently nowadays, or I managed to get my shit together adequately enough to not miss your posts. Or both. In any case, I'm glad. :)

  •  Planned obsolescence in the manufacturing (4+ / 0-)

sector morphed into failure by design and that morphed into planning to fail in the political arena under the aegis of the creative distructionists, who argue that, if something is going to fail anyway, it's preferable for the destruction to be controlled, rather than random. It's a variant of the philosophy behind a controlled demolition in which large structures are blown to collapse in place. It's an example of what happens in the real world being idealized and rendered virtual. It's particularly well suited to do-nothing Cons, who, given that the natural condition is one of change, need only obstruct to keep what they have and do nothing further.
Failure by design keeps politicians in office to "try and try again." Failure is more rewarding, if the object is to persist or save, than success. Success is terminal where failure is on-going.
The story of Jesus Christ is a good example. His torture and death are played out annually over many weeks; His resurrection hardly gets noticed.

interesting article recently about "they hate us because of our freedoms" noting that the attacks on our freedoms at home by our own system means less freedom, hence less attacks from those who hate our freedom!

freedom is the watch word of the right wing economists and most politicians

the 99%, if organized, can gain power

with the oligarchy in control, freedom is another piece of propaganda to hide what is going on
