Right now Obama is a bit stuck.
With the House focusing on doing nothing, not much chance for Obama to pass a new agenda. So the key for Obama is control of the House and Senate in 2014. Without that, it will be a pretty gloomy 2 yrs.
So can he do it?

Well, first the stock market is roaring. I know that's not necessarily correlated with employment, but I expect it will be good for Obama's polls. Also it will raise tax revenue.

Second, Obamacare is implemented in 2014. Perhaps that's what the Republicans are afraid of. Actually Open Enrollment begins Oct. 1, 2013.
Once that happens, if it is well done, people are going to demand Obamacare. People in Tennessee and Florida and Virginia are going to wonder why their Republican representatives and been fighting so hard against Obamacare, when it's something they really want.
And that is Obama's not-so-secret weapon.

what effect will the implementation of Obamacare lead to Democratic control of the House/Senate in 2014?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  this alone won't be enough (7+ / 0-)

dems are going to have to invest serious time, money and organizing efforts into registering and GOTVing young and nonwhite voters, whose turnout often drops off in midterm elections but whose proportion of the populace is growing quickly. this won;t happen on its own.

next, dems are going to have to get started early on making sure that every single race is contested. as we saw in 2006 and 2008, you gotta have people in place in order to take advantage of unforseen events, scandals, and blunders.

finally, obama and senate dems need to get smarter about setting the GOP (especially the house GOP) up as a villain to the electorate, by giving them lots of great stuff to block. if you can't get shit done, take advantage of that fact to play some political theatre.

is pushing down the deficit. It looks in fact like the Admin. will not be asking for an increase inthe debt limit for a while.

Voting is the means by which the public is distracted from the realities of power and its exercise.

have to approve of it. Based on 2009-10 it's unlikely that the Democratic Party will try very hard to accomplish either of those things.

Activists ought to be brainstorming right now about what kind of contribution we can make to 2014 progressive turnout. We can't count on the party fighting to take power.

    Because that aint enough.
Particularly since implementation is subject to sabotage by the House and the GOP Governors in many states.
I'd love to think that we can cruise to victory in 2014 on the strength of Obamacare. Not gonna happen.
We'll be lucky if we can keep the Senate, let alone take the House.
And if we do take the House it will be because we worked our 4sses off to make it happen.

If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!

Here in MA we've had Romneycare for years now. Yes. a lot of people here have insurance who didn't use to, but a lot of those policies are "hollow", with high deductables and lots of loopholes. Heaven help most of those people if they get sick, because the insurance companies won't pay.

And health care costs continue to go up every year.

Give us single-payer, or give us death; otherwise sooner or later we'll all be sick and bankrupt.
