Friday!
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
We have split up the publishing duties, but we welcome everyone in IAN to do daily diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
Ok, we have a (mostly) finished diary schedule. If you would like to fill in, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMom a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FSNMom is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.
End of the week for some, beginning or middle for others. And for some of us just another day. Today is a big day for my family, I'll explain why beneath the Itzl
For me, today is many things. It's the end of the school year for my kids. My son is finishing 11th grade, my daughter is finishing 4th. It's been a year of many changes for them, including a move to a different city. But they've handled it well over all and accomplished much. I'm going to be glad for the break, at least for a few weeks, then I'll start missing the research, the planning, and the dedicated time with the kids each day. Yes, you heard that right, I said I'll miss the research. I'm a nerd and I love learning new things. This gives me an excuse and an orderly way to do such.
But on the bright side, before the end of June I'll start planning out the next year. I have to find a decent Geometry program for my son, because I'm going to be of little help with that. Ditto with physics because I'll be learning it along side him. It also has to be one that works within his disability, giving him the support he requires but the flexibility he needs to learn. History we'll continue the way we've been doing it the past few years. Next year we start with Calvin Coolidge. I'm hoping to get at least through Vietnam if not through the Reagan years.
I learn so much more teaching him history than I've ever learned in public school myself. I think because we don't rush through it, we look into things in depth, and from several angles. For example we spent from January through May on WWI. I don't remember spending more than a couple of days at a time on it in school myself. WWII was a different matter, I took a dedicated course on that.
It's also the Friday before my birthday, so for me it marks the end of the year in a different personal way. I always celebrate my birthday on Memorial day, but this year it falls on it as well. In some ways I'm doing better, in others worse, but I definitely feel older.
So, what does the end of May mean to you and your family? Do you have traditions, celebrations for Memorial Day? Do you have kids or grandkids moving on in their education? For you is it the beginning or the end of the year? And what do you do to exercise your mind? How do you keep your own personal education moving forward?
