It is now 2:20 in the morning.
I thought events could go either way. Maybe calm down as seemed to be happening this (Sunday) morning or they could heat up.
It seems that the force used against the protesters in Turkey and the Prime Minister's and several government official's aggressive rhetoric is being met with more intense protests.
For example the mayor of Ankara said 'If this wasn't a democracy I'd drown you in a spoonful of water.'
The borough office of the AKP (the ruling party) in Karsiyaka, Izmir has been set on fire and completely burned. Many other AKP offices around Turkey are under protest.
There is a huge protest still going on right now in Besiktas, Istanbul near the Prime Minister's Istanbul office.
There were/are intense protests in at least 8 cities tonight, some are still going on. I have seen reports that 1,700+ have been arrested today.
Protesters in Besiktas have taken a large backhoe and are driving it towards the PM's office with a large number of protesters behind it. Many, many tear gas cannisters are being fired at them. There are so many injuries in Besiktas that a mosque has had to be turned into a kind of emergency room.
The number of injured today is reported to be very high with many serious injuries.
Update: In a neighborhood called Akaretler near Besiktas (I think the Besiktas protest is still going on) there was a large protest tonight.
It was was broken up by police shooting a really huge amount of tear gas about 90 minutes ago.
The protesters waited for the police to leave and then came back and are cleaning up the streets of the neighborhood now - at 3:00 in the morning.
The same thing happened yesterday (Sunday) morning. The protesters helped clean up Gezi Park.
Update: It's now 3:35 in the morning (Monday). From what I have been able to learn the situation around the country seems to be calming down - except in Besiktas.
There are reports that there are at least 4 people in the hospital with life threatening injuries.
Many lawyers have gone to many of the locations where people are being held to represent them - reportedly 900 arrested in Ankara alone.
I'm going to try to sleep now.
I really have no idea how things will develop tromorrow.
These are two other diaries about the protests.
