I know it might be hard, but if you had to list your favorite novel, could you? I have so many that I could list but there is one that tops my list.... one that I grew up reading that when I was a kid I looked forward to checking out of the library and reading every few years. Although the book was not "Young Adult" it was easy enough to understand and each time I read it I grasped some other element of nuance I had missed before.
It had been years since I last read the book, in fact over 25 and I just picked it up again and I am re-reading it now and loving it as much now as I did then.
The book is: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith.
I've put the first paragraph below, to hook you if you've not read the book yet I'd strongly suggest it on many, many levels.
So, what about you? What book is your favorite? What, if possible, is the opening paragraph to it?
Serene was a word you could put to Brooklyn, New York. Especially in the summer of 1912. Somber, as a word, was better. But it did not apply to Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Prairie was lovely and Shenandoah had a beautiful sound, but you couldn't fit those words into Brooklyn. Serene was the only word for it; especially on a Saturday afternoon in summer.
