Chicago, Illinois - Strike of Cooks and Waiters Broken by Imported Scabs
The effort of the restaurant employers to reopen their establishments using imported scabs appears to have succeeded. The other unions in the industry are refusing to assist their fellow workers to win this strike. Most notably, the Teamsters have continued to make deliveries. The hotel and restaurant owners are crowing that the strike will be completely broken within the next few days.

Cabin Creek, West Virginia - Coal Operators Violating the Hatfield Settlement Plan
According to the strike settlement worked out by Governor Hatfield, the mine operators are not to practice discrimination against union miners. Seems the Governor left enforcement of his settlement plan up to the moral judgement of the operators. Miners in upper Cabin Creek are reporting that men are being discharged for joining the union. A mass meeting of miners was held recently to discuss a response to the discharges. A strike call has not yet been issued, but a renewal of the strike on Cabin Creek could be called at any time.

From Working In These Times: Patriot Coal Cancels Bargaining Sessions with UMWA
[On Thursday], according to the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), Patriot Coal walked away from the bargaining table, indicating that starting July 1, they would unilaterally implement a new contract, one likely to severely cut the pay and benefits of 1,700 current union workers and the benefits of 23,000 retirees. Patriot gained this ability on May 29 after a federal bankruptcy judge gave the company the power to cancel previous collective bargaining agreements.
Patriot Coal CEO Bennett Hatfield had indicated that the company would continue to negotiations with the union, saying after the court decision, “while the Court has given Patriot the authority to impose these critical changes to the collective bargaining agreements, and our financial needs mandate implementation by July 1, we continue to believe that a consensual resolution is the best possible outcome for all parties.” But the UMWA now says that Patriot has cancelled all bargaining sessions for this week and next week, which suggests the company plans on implementing a contract without input from the UMWA.
