Add riding a bicycle down the street to the list of things that are dangerous because one of your neighbors has a firearm. According to The Washington Post, John E. Albers, was loading his handgun in his house in Herndon, Virginia when it discharged. The bullet then struck someone riding a bicycle down the street. The bicyclist then had to be taken to the hospital so that surgery could be performed. There is no information in the article about the condition of the bicyclist.
Police said John E. Albers, 49, was charged with willfully discharging a firearm in a public place resulting in injury and taken to the county detention center.

I am sure that Albers did not intend to shoot the person riding the bicycle, but this incident is yet another example of an accidental shooting because someone owned a gun.
Conspicuously absent from the rhetoric of the NRA that I have seen is any discussion of balancing the rights of gun owners with the safety rights of the general public. Surely everyone should agree that someone should be able to ride a bicycle down the street without the risk of being accidentally shot by someone loading a gun.
