Received this e-mail today from Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D. NH) regarding the Voting Rights Act:
When the Supreme Court struck down a key section of the landmark Voting Rights Act, I knew we were in for trouble.
In one week, extremist politicians in six of the nine states formerly required to get preclearance from the federal government to change voting procedures are already trying to restrict voting. They’re reviving old efforts, shut down by the Voting Rights Act, and launching new ones. Their efforts target students, minorities and seniors with restrictive voter ID laws and politically calculated redistricting.
We have to stop them. If they get these laws through, we’ll face an uphill battle in 2014 and 2016 – with many of our supporters forced to the sidelines.
Voting is fundamental to our democracy. It’s at the core of our rights. Congress needs to fix what the Supreme Court has undone – and they need to hear from you.

When our voting rights have come under attack, we’ve always answered the call. We’ve rallied for minorities, marched for women and pushed to include young adults of 18.
It’s time again for us to speak out. The Court’s move was a political one, and the other side was waiting to take advantage – and they are. Immediately, they’ve proven the importance of the Voting Rights Act.
Help us get it back in place. Together, we have to make sure anyone who wants to vote can. Use your voice to restore those of our fellow citizens.
Click here to demand the House and Senate pass new legislation to restore the Voting Rights Act. We have to act now:

The right to vote is worth fighting for – it always has been.
Thank you,
Jeanne
