Sigh.
In today's Allen West news, Allen West gets angry at Lady Gaga on Facebook, which may be the single most depressing sentence ever written. I need to lie down now.
All right, I'm back. The problem, you see, is that Lady Gaga performed the national anthem at the beginning of New York City's Gay Pride Parade, but when she was finishing up she said "home of the gay" instead of "home of the brave," and Allen West did not join the U.S. Army and go to Iraq and do things he would later be drummed out of the military for so that she could go changing words around like that.
Having served in the US Army for 22 years alongside some very brave men and women, I find Lady Gaga's defiling of our National Anthem reprehensible. We are the land of the free because America has always been the home of the brave from Lexington and Concord to Kandahar. This young lady should be taken to Ft. McHenry and given a history lesson as to why Francis Scott Key wrote those words incredible words.
And Francis Scott Key should be taken to a recording studio and learn how to write a goddamn song, but I digress.
In this week where we remember the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and the 237th anniversary of our Independence is further evidence of the level of ignorance and disrespect some have for our national character. She and all those who cheered her abomination should be ashamed and apologize to every serving and retired member of our Armed Services. But perhaps I ask too much…
The minute you appeared on the national stage and asked us all to take you seriously, you asked too much. All the rest has been noise.
There is a certain class of person who gets really and truly upset whenever someone botches the national anthem. Or, for that matter, when certain people even dare sing it. I must admit I've never been able to wrap my mind around the concept, nor have I ever thought that if someone sang the national anthem badly, or mixed up the words, or viciously changed one word in a blatant and outrageous act of political commentary they had to apologize to me, personally, or to the entire United States Armed Forces. Then again, I am not a shameless publicity whore, nor do I confuse the symbols of freedom with actual effing freedom.
But now I really do need to lie down for a while.
