Egypt's Army Takes Power
Egypt's army took power from President Mohamed Morsi and suspended the constitution. Army tanks are surrounding the presidentail palace, and Morsi's whereabouts are unknown.
The head of the constitutional court will be sworn in to run the county's affairs, form a technocrat government, and call for early elections, the Army chief said.
In a live televised statement, Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said the action was taken to resolve the political crisis in Egypt.
I don't pretend to be able to really make sense out of this. However, it does seem clear that things have generally not fared well for the Arab Spring. Democratic government requires some sort of basic consensus about how to conduct a government and deal with differences.
From an outside perspective Morsi was elected in an election that at the time was generally seen as legitimate. Clearly the military which has always held the power in the country saw the election as being contingent on their continued approval. It is difficult to see how Egypt can break out of this cycle.
