On this Independence Day, let's take a moment to reflect upon the meaning of patriotism. Conservatives sometimes accuse liberals of lacking this civic virtue, but they could not be more wrong.
Progressives believe that America -- as one of the great nations of the world -- has a great responsibility. We have the responsibility to be a good nation. A good nation must have a good government.
Progressives affirm the vision of past generations who voted to invest in America, our people and our future. We reject the notion that America must decrease the good things that our government does. Investment brings progress and prosperity; austerity causes stagnation and decline. And it would be unconscionable for the wealthiest nation on earth to abandon its promises to our elders, the sick and disabled, our children and young people, and other Americans who need help to survive and thrive.
- Progressives understand that it's patriotic to ensure affordable health care for all, a secure retirement for seniors, and unemployment and disability benefits for those who are struggling and suffering.
- Progressives understand that it's patriotic to provide a strong education and job training to everyone, including access to college for those who can't afford it.
- Progressives understand that it's patriotic to maintain and improve America's infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, rails, and flood prevention systems.
- Progressives understand that it's patriotic to protect the economy from reckless behavior by financial corporations.
- Progressives understand that it's patriotic to prevent pollution and climate change, and to encourage the development of renewable energy for an ecologically responsible future for America and the world.
These are essential priorities of a 21st century civilization. They are basics of good government in modern times. Progressives patriotically stand for these values and policies that will help make America not only great, but good.
Progressives also understand that greatness is not primarily about projecting military power abroad -- it is, first and foremost, about how a country takes care of its own people and builds its own future. As the saying goes, "Physician, heal thyself." True patriotism requires nation-building here at home.
