Received this e-mail from the Human Rights Campaign:
The School Success and Opportunity Act is now on the governor's desk. Governor Brown has the opportunity to provide full protections for transgender students in California by signing this bill, but he needs to hear from you.
While existing California law already broadly prohibits discrimination against transgender students, the bill will make sure that schools understand their responsibility for the success and well-being of all students and that parents and students understand their rights.
For students who are transgender, the denial of important educational opportunities, resulting from challenges regarding getting ready for gym class to teachers who refuse to honor a student’s chosen gender pronouns, often mean students are unable to obtain the credits they need to graduate on time. No student should have to experience such indignities based on their identity.
Most schools want to support their transgender youth and pursue a path that will allow transgender students to reach their full potential. This bill will empower school administrators to be fully inclusive in all school programs, activities, and facilities.
Contact Governor Brown today and tell him that all students deserve fair access at school.
