He was all alone in the big world.
He was skinny and dirty and flea-bitten.
He was very small and afraid.
Somebody hurt him and abandoned him,
but somebody else helped him.
Somebody else took him to the shelter.
Somebody else washed him.
Somebody else fed him.
Somebody else gave him a soft, dark place to sleep.
Somebody else healed him.
Somebody else took him home.
Somebody else loves him today.
Be somebody else.
I wrote this with my own woozle, Lucky Angus MacPup in mind, but it's a story poem that could be about any rescued animal.
I usually write about how we humans treat each other, but I believe that kindness towards animals is a virtue we should all practice. If we are to exist on a liveable planet, we need to extend our respect and protection to all creatures. It's easy to love furry, dewy-eyed sweethearts, but we must also consider nematodes, phytoplankton, even mosquitos as part of our own web of life. Their survival is our survival.
