More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

the profound irony being Wendy Davis using this very tool and NOW Reid decides he's gonna get back on this horse. what an ass.

how many times do I need to hear about Reid and the filibuster? how many times more and nothing changes. it only gets worse.

n mandated ultrasounds for abortions bc somehow it had nothing to do with abortions...

The US Senate filibuster doesn't even require the flibester-ers to be present. It not a filibuster, its a one man veto.

          •  you're not getting it... (0+ / 0-)

in one breath we're all yipping up wendy davis and the next we want to "do something" about filibusters. the timing is stupid.

next, rather than being instructive as to why Wendy Davis' filibuster was good and how the Republicans in Washington abuse it was lost... most people don't know the differences and more importantly, this is a game the Dems play to make you think they're doing something.

what would you like to bet nothing happens in the latest round of let's whack the mole?

i've been listening to this blah blah blah for years now and i'm just telling you this: it's ridiculous.

it really is time to move on from national political brands and start focusing on where people are truly getting stuff done: LOCALLY.

            •  We can walk and chew gum at same time, local and n (0+ / 0-)

at'l and must.  Thugs hold the House in large part bc of focusing on local and using that on redistricting.

But, that is something born of necessity: bc they increasingly are bound to lose nationally as ethnic groups Thugs have and do treat with contempt become larger parts of the electorate.

As for the filibuster, I remind you that its history is to slowly whittle it away: the cloture rule was not adopted until 1917.  It itself was a recent creation in Western legislatures at that time, only being made permanent in the English parliment in 1887.  Until 1975, it took 2/3rd of Senators voting, now only 3/5ths.  There is kabuki here but it is institutional kubuki, built into the history of Senate.  OTOH, the 'silent filibuster' is a recent abomination and comparison of #s in the last decade with 1975-2000 suggests getting rid of that alone would do much to restore functioning to the Senate.

The lesson the recent filibuster 'showdown' is not to 'tune out and turn off' but to keep the pressure up and elect more Senators who will vote the way we want on it.

As for your claim the public does not understand the difference bt a speaking filibuster and the abomination the Senate has now, 1) Neither of us knows the real numbers I suspect, and 2) I'd bet polling would being interestng.

And btw, in the not too distant future Thugs will have the Senatre majority.  If they keep the House and get the Presidency, the filibuster is likely doomed.  Even if we keep the Presidency in 2016, they would likely weaken it significantly to force vetoes for political reasons.  It will not matter that those vetoes will likely be popular among the Presidential electorate.

We are seeing a transitional period of US politics that will resurrect the notion of 'Presidental' and "Congressional' parties being fundamentally distinct as mny scholars have argued at various periods of US history, the most recent ending in the '70s.

In the Federal Senate, they don't even have to do that.

Turns out, we didn't have to change the rules, the threat was enough to force the GOP to cave. That is progress.

The Democrats create jobs. The Republicans create recessions.

...if you are a Republican hell-bent on demonstrating that government doesn't work.

Wonks getting to do their work-- making and enforcing policy for the good of the American people-- that's just terrible!  Can't have that happen...people will maybe LIKE government programs or something.
