Rep. Steve King (R-IA)
last week to the lunatics at Newsmax:
There are kids that were brought into this country by their parents unknowing that they were breaking the law. And [immigration reform supporters] will say to me and others that we have to do something about the 11 million, and some of them were valedictorians. [...] It's true in some cases, but they aren't all valedictorians, they weren't all brought in by their parents. For every one that's a valedictorian, there's another 100 out there that they weigh 130 pounds and they've got calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.
It's as clear as it ever was that Steve King is a racist crackpot, but one question this raises is whether his behavior is so embarrassing to Republicans that it might actually make it harder for them to refuse to act on immigration reform without paying a serious political price ... or whether statements like this merely serve to harden the antipathy of the GOP base towards immigrants.
The other question is a little less serious, but it has to be asked: How in the world did Steve King get the cantaloupe-calve image in his head, and why is he so obsessed with the imaginary physique of his imaginary drug-runners?
