The police chief of the tiny Pennsylvania town of Gilberton became a national figure this month, and it's
not for reasons that any town would like:
What Kessler did was post a series of profanity-laced, politically caustic, pro-gun, pro-Constitution videos earlier this month. In the days since, the have gone viral, attracting local, state and national coverage, culminating in tonight's meeting on Kessler's 14 years of employment with the borough.
In one of the videos, Kessler, 41, complains colorfully – and with some vulgarity -- about the United Nations and Secretary of State John Kerry. In another, Kessler, sporting his badge, appears to school the viewer on the basics of shooting a gun. But for his target, the controversial chief selects a picture of a clown that he refers to as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
Penn Live reporter John Luciew attended a Gilberton meeting this evening on what to do with their new, unfortunate celebrity; the meeting was attended by a slew of gun-toting "bodyguards" who surrounded Kessler and took up positions around the meeting place. Luciew's Twitter feed
includes numerous pictures of that group. Luciew reports that the Gilberton council voted 5-1 to suspend Kessler for a period of 30 days without pay for "using Boro property without permission."
Blast from the Past. At Daily Kos on this date in 2003—Pure idiocy:
Jack Kelly is a former undersecretary of the Air Force and a goddamn idiot. His idiocy must have been the key to his employment by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, which is the non-Richard Melon Scaife paper in Pittsburgh. How he missed his calling there is beyond me. Our readers corrected me and for that I am glad.
Vietnam is mostly jungle. I don't like jungles, but guerrillas do. There is plenty of cover and concealment. There is plenty of water. There are a lot of things to eat. Creepy crawly yucky things, but you can eat them if you have to. A large guerrilla force can live, relatively securely, in jungles for long periods. Iraq is mostly desert. Desert offers little cover or concealment, less food and water.
No. Iraq is one of the most urbanized countries on earth. Most Iraqis live in cities. Not that deserts have stopped rebellions. But then you would have to read history to know that. They have maps of this, you know.

We're renovating the
Kagro in the Morning show World Headquarters today, so it's time for another look back at One Year Ago in KITM. What was up on July 31, 2012? Reminisce about Olden Tymes, with a "Today in Congress" summary, and
Greg Dworkin's round-up at the top of the show. All in all, a wide-ranging production, touching on the "fiscal cliff," the likely addition of a marriage equality plank to the Democratic Party platform, the continuing Romneyshambles saga, and the audition of a new voice chip for the Romneybot3000, reading from
Hunter's classic "Chronicles of Mitt" series.
