I don't know what it is about liars that makes my blood boil - that has always made my blood boil, for as far back as I can remember in life. When someone would say something false, even unintentionally, it was at best irritating and more often infuriating when it was clearly deliberate. A lie is an act of hidden violence, trying to force others to obey your will by distorting what they know, and is the most selfish, petty, and cowardly act in the canon of human immorality. Ultimately you know a sociopath from a person with a conscience by what intrinsic value they place on the truth, and it's always disheartening to realize just how normalized sociopathic behavior is in our society - how cavalierly people will lie, sometimes with outright malice, just to make themselves feel better at your expense. It will put hate in your heart if you let it, but that would be an unnecessary surrender.
Whether it's the unfeeling bureaucrat who can't be bothered to understand your circumstances, the rude stranger who won't even clean up the mess they made that's imposed on you, the coworker or boss who leeches on your work and then blames you for the results of their inattention to detail, the bigoted acquaintance who never misses any opportunity to demean you through whatever excuse presents itself...and so on, ad nauseum, with every other imaginable case of petty injustice in everyday life. It would put hate in your heart if it were allowed, and you would turn into just another part of the problem. If you let it, you're no longer their victim, but their colleague in corrosion.
But I find a better way. People who hate you hate to see you happy, productive, and undistracted - they hate to see you unaffected by what they do. They see most of all hate to see you doing good things. And they hate most of all that you would be willing to help them, because that brings the moral house of cards all crashing down for them. If you're a good person who has to deal with a lot of sick assholes with minimal conscience, there's only one road to travel: To be forever focused on good, productive work, and on conscientiously helping others.
There was a poster in Northern Ireland posted by one of the factions saying "Our Revenge is the laughter of our children." And that is the perfect philosophy. So some mindless troll asshole calls me a right-winger in the middle of a fundraising drive I'm running for charity, I won't pretend I'm not infuriated at the sheer sickness and mendacity of it. Or at the brazen stupidity of how obviously dumb it looks in context. The feelings are the feelings. But they don't change what's important: That someone needs some money that I have, and I'm giving it to them to help them out. That's what liberals do, that's progressives do, that's what people with any kind of conscience do. And people who are none of the above, I guess, just hang around those events trolling and heckling them.
So the people who hear good news and grimace angrily because it doesn't fit their sick narratives; the people who snarl in rage to see folks they demonize doing good things and working together for the betterment of the American people; those people segregate themselves into the community they represent: The Community of The Lie, where narrative and hate and innuendo are the guiders of reality, and compassion, truth, intelligent reflection, and responsibility are alien concepts. Well, they're welcome to wallow in Mordor for all they care, but they can shreik in rage watching the rest of us doing what is right for our world, by our country, by the truth, and by ourselves.
My love for this world, humanity, this country, and for the people who live and grow toward the greater flourishing of life and society will never fade, and my loyalty to making the world a better place will never wane. That's all the revenge there is to be had against the bitter, hateful, and destructive: To place the anger and hate they force on you toward productive ends, toward a better and life-affirming ends. So let that be our warcry: That the carefree laughter of our children is our revenge against Republican depravity and greed. And as long as I live, my laughter, my smiles, my happiness in the joy I get from helping others, that will be my revenge against the narcissistic parasites who do nothing but attack and denigrate the good people of this world. So if you have to deal with people like that, just focus on doing the good things that don't involved them, and the good will hurt them more than anything else could.
