So why do you need to know which actor - codename Houdini - has been selected to play the Doctor in the BBC series "Dr Who?" following Matt Smith's departure in the Christmas special in December?

1. You are a Whovian
2. Geek cred that you were one of the first members of the public to know?
3. You are into celebrity trivial
4. You don't know but you got lured into the diary on a slow day.

The name of the new actor (or actress?) is to be announced in a live special on BBC One at 19:00 B.S.T. Those of you with naughty VPN access should note.

Knowing Auntie the name will likely come late in the programme but I'll post as it goes along.

11:08 AM PT: Programme starts with flashbacks of previous Doctors and companions.

11:10 AM PT: Interview with Peter Davison (previous Doctor) and two other actors who have appeared in the series.

11:11 AM PT: Large Tardis (bit of a contradiction in terms) at the center of the set (with new Doctor inside?)

11:15 AM PT: Peter Davison praises Partick Troughton, the first Doctor he knew, for creating the role.

Interview with Matt Smith (looks like the big reveal is going to be at the end)

11:19 AM PT: Zoe Ball (presenter) gives teaser "he - or is it she?"

11:17 AM PT: Zoe explains regeneration. Previous companions and others explain character. Stephen Hawking "He is a soldier".

11:25 AM PT: Interview with Bernard Cribbins (Wilf) and a comedian Rufus Sewell (fan) wearing T-shirt "Keep Calm and don't Regenerate"

11:29 AM PT: Steven Moffatt (exec producer) explains all team had same idea about who should be new Doctor. More teasers by not using sex-defining terms, rather  is a "person". Nearly picked last time. Stephen Hawking mentions woman Doctor. Moffatt does not rule that out.

11:30 AM PT: The new Doctor is -  Peter Capaldi

11:28 AM PT: Capaldi  relieved can now tell his daughter.

11:34 AM PT: Capaldi is a fine comic actor - has most recently played in a BBC series based inside government in the UK

Was filming Cardinal Richlieu (sp?) in BBC production of Three Musketeers.

Was in Dr Who episode "Fires of Pompeii"

11:36 AM PT: Matt Smith "a canny choice".

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
