March 1903
Oxnard, California
In the town of Oxnard, California, about 60 miles north of Los Angeles, Beet Workers were on strike. Unity between the Mexican and Japanese workers had been achieved, and they had organized into the Japanese-Mexican Labor Association. The Beet Sugar Company was caught by surprise by this show of Solidarity across the color line. They soon brought scabs into the conflict by way of the Western Agricultural Contracting Company along with deputized gunthugs, heavily armed.
On the afternoon of March 24, 1903, the gunthugs and the scabs opened fire on a peaceful picket line of unarmed union men. Louis Vasquez was killed and four union men were injured.
