Comes from a known-violent civilization
I've run out of insulting things to say about Rep. Steve King, so I think I'm just going to hum quietly to myself while he explains why brown immigrants (not just the kind with insufficient paperwork, mind you, but apparently the whole vast swath of them)
are naturally violent:
He began his nearly half-hour speech here arguing against immigration reform, claiming societies tend to become more violent as one moves farther south in Latin America.
“Now think what that is,” King said to the 60 or so attendees at the rally. “If you bring people from a violent civilization into a less-violent civilization, you’re going to have more violence right? It’s like pouring hot water into cold water, does it raise the temperature or not?”
Huh. Well, all right then.
This theme of King's came out of essentially nowhere, to my eyes; he seems to have lifted Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's assertions of Arizona being an ungovernable drug-violence-riddled hellhole where the desert is littered with severed human heads and attached it to the discussion of the longtime-resident children of undocumented workers as if they were one and the same thing, but there might be some particular conservative strain of bigotry specific to his state or district here, something cobbled together out of 1980's action movies and the craptastic racism of even earlier decades. As modern conservative "wisdom" worked itself into a lather, the last few years, undocumented immigrants somehow went from being people who primarily work as farm workers, construction workers and other difficult, strenuous jobs with terrible pay to being violent drug mules (100-to-1 ratio with valedictorians, remember) whose proclivity towards doing violence to you can be generally assumed by ... the geographic latitude from which they departed? What now?
(Side note: I think, also too, that we upstanding Americans and certain of our peace-loving administrations and government institutions have historically had quite a few pointed somethings to do with the violence brought upon certain Latin American locales, hinty-hint-hint, but that's not going to go anywhere with Mr. King so I'll just park that there.)
I'm sure someone will be able to easily come up with the badly copied pamphlet or conservative cultist that Steve King is parroting from, and we'll find out that his "theories" on young immigrant kids running border drugs and planning violent military takeovers of the local Arby's come from something the John Birch society or LaRoucheites or Steve King's meth-addicted cousin once hypothesized back in nineteen-dickety-two, but he seems to be out on his own on this one even when compared to his fellow members of the worst and dumbest and meanest Congress ever. How very odd. He's gone all Glenn Beck on the immigration issue, and it doesn't appear he'll be coming back.
