Well it looks like according to CNN, Sen Cruz is turning is back on his Canadian Heritage.
As a result of the Dallas Morning News article, he stated
"Now the Dallas Morning News says that I may technically have dual citizenship. Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship," he continued. "Nothing against Canada, but I'm an American by birth, and as a U.S. Senator, I believe I should be only an American."
"Senator Cruz became a U.S. citizen at birth, and he never had to go through a naturalization process after birth to become a U.S. citizen," spokeswoman Catherine Frazier told the newspaper. "To our knowledge, he never had Canadian citizenship, so there is nothing to renounce."
Of course, as I have previously mentioned Canadian citizenship is automatic. Even if you don't legally exercise it you have acquired it by birth.
I am not an immigration lawyer or any lawyer for that matter, but someone who is a)a Canuck and b) has researched the laws for various reasons.
Canada, like most countries in the world grants citizenship to babies born on Canadian soil, Canadian ships and Canadian registered planes etc.
There are a few countries like Germany and Japan, which don't grant automatically grant citizenship to babies born in those countries.
In Ted's case, he is an American because he met the statutory requirements of receiving citizenship automatically(i.e. not naturalized).
He probably received Canadian citizenship at birth, he may never have obtained a Canadian passport, but that would be immaterial as a passport doesn't grant citizenship it merely proves it.
Renouncing Canadian citizenship is a positive act meaning, only after you go a Canadian consular official and submitting the paperwork/fees can you renounce citizenship.
I guess Sen. Cruz will take a walk down Pennsylvania Avenue to renounce his Canadian citizenship. Don't forget to fill out your
forms. We will miss your membership in the club, don't forget to turn your hidden agenda handbook.
Oh and get a better research team together, if you don't know about this stuff by now. Your opponents either in the GOP or Democratic will do your homework for you.
