I posted an opinion yesterday about a possible US response to the attacks in Syria, and I did this before I weighed a few facts that I had forgotten about from my history research.
Maybe it is the right time to decide on a hard-core course of response to what they are doing to the people in Syria: if of course we have a plan which is credible and mindful of the civilians who will inevitably be in harms way.
We (the US) stood by in the past when we were aware of an atrocity-in-the-making and did nothing in order to not be drawn into a war which was seen as not being "our problem".
Well, it was our problem and it became a worldwide problem to boot!
Our government was the only one capable of having prepared a stop-gap measure which would have diverted at least some of the tragic events which were a part of the world war of the 1940s. I have had the privilege of talking with survivors of those "vacation camps" as some of the neo-jerks would have us believe that they were; and it is not a story of pretty content. The US could have led the opposition that would have prevented the buildup of the German war machine, and saved the lives of countless innocent victims, as well as those of hundreds of thousands f military personnel, many of whom were never actually accounted for! I know the families of several of our troops who never came back and have as of now, still remain listed as MIA.
A course of response is necessary, and maybe it is the place of the US to be in the forefront. One thing that is for certain; the people in this region who would use these weapons, will not stop simply at using them on their own people!
These are a people of violence, and the only response to which they will ever take notice, is that of greater violence! American citizens have only tasted a small portion of the vitriol of this region, so we have little if any point of reference to use in assessing of what they are willing to do.
Roosevelt allowed his congress to make a policy of non-interference, and then we were attacked into World War II, are we seeing the beginnings of a similar situation? We must be aware that even our "Third World" enemies have nuclear devices to use against us, and maybe we need to use a hardline approach in response to this use of inhumane tactics to relay the message that they'd better not do it again!
This carries no easily surmised solutions that is for certain; however the United States, must take a stance of non-acceptance in response to any country that would do something of this nature! We waited on Saddam Hussein after he gassed his people, and a few short years later, we were forced into sending our troops to reel him back into line! Was the wait worth the aftermath? Desert-storm, Iraqi-Freedom, Afghanistan, and now, Syria and Iran?
Minus the support of the Brits which is expected, we need to pay close attention to what the Russians are saying. After all, they have a vested interest in the area.
I cannot approve of combat; but I do know that it may be inevitable, and this time out, I would rather see the US in a position to kick the asses of those who would attack her, before she became a sacrificial lamb! Remember 9/11/2001? All of the sings were pointing toward something significant and detrimental happening, and the egos would not allow for a common sense position to be assumed; that should never happen again!
This seemingly has nothing but disaster written all over its face, but this time, we have to see a cohesive congress that will allow the world to know that the US is no longer allowing itself to be anyone's free-range target!
I hope war is not the outcome, but let's face it; that is all that this enemy respects: violence. Maybe we should show them that they cannot get away with this. I am sure that they will have no qualms about attempting to hit tis country, or any other they feel is worthy of the "honor".
Difficult times, call for difficult choices to be made, that is why we elect leadership into our government; the time for them to step up, is now!
