DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz Statement on Syria
Washington, D.C. – Following President Obama’s remarks this afternoon, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement:
“The use of chemical weapons by the regime of Bashar al-Assad against the people of Syria is a violation of international norms and it presents a serious danger to U.S. national security interests. As Secretary of State John Kerry explained to the nation Friday, the use and potential proliferation of such weapons affects the stability of the region, bringing with it risks to the safety and security of our friends in Israel, Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon.
“In recent days, President Obama has demonstrated a clear willingness to engage members of Congress about how to respond to the tactics of the Assad regime. Today’s announcement that he would seek Congressional approval will indeed help make our country stronger and ensure that we are united in a course of action.
“The decision to use the U.S. Military should never be taken lightly. I urge both parties to put partisan politics aside and consider this important issue with the seriousness that it demands.”
