Rising Tide
Think About Our Children
On Saturday the three of us went to Palo Alto to join with other 350.org members and environmental activists across the country to
Draw the Line. About 70 people including the Raging Grannies, kids and parents marched through the quiet, tree lined neighborhood streets in Palo Alto to show the impact of sea level rise in the Peninsula Area. According to
350 Silicon Valley’s Facebook page:
Many areas in the Peninsula/South Bay will be underwater with just a few feet of sea level rise including SFO, most of Foster City, Moffet Field, Alviso, large stretches of 101 and neighborhoods in Palo Alto and East Palo Alto.
We lined up at the edge of the park in single file about a block in length, together we carried a blue streamer indicating the projected water line from sea level rise. It is predicted that in 50-80 years major streets, Highway 101, homes, schools and parks will be under water.

As Meteor Blades wrote this morning
In a sign of stiffening resistance to the Keystone XL pipeline, leaders of 25 environmental and other groups sent a letter to President Obama Tuesday reiterating their opposition to the project and urging him not to approve it.
Local protests across the country echo the
voices of environmental leaders. Eight year old Elliot asked me to sign his petition requiring that all new buildings have electric vehicle chargers in Palo Alto. He is a very well spoken young man even when he talks about
poop.
Worse Than Poop
Did you know that even burning a gallon of gas creates 19 pounds of carbon dioxide? That carbon dioxide is worse than poop. Cause carbon dioxide is heating up the planet. A bit is good so that the trees can breathe but too much can be bad, so can too little, but our problem today is having too much so we need to fix that. Carbon dioxide is worse than poop.
Elliot's mom is Vanessa Warheit, activist and videographer of
Cool City Challenge.
The world's cities are responsible for up to 70% of harmful greenhouse gasses.
They have become the real battleground in the fight against Climate Change.
What goes on in cities, and how they manage their impact on the environment, lies at the core of the problem.
-UN-Habitat 2011 Global Report
25% of the 400 cities in California have climate action plans but they don't have models or resources to implement their plan. Cool City Challenge provides a model and resources for these cities to reduce their carbon footprint by addressing the individual, the home, the town and finally the city.
It may have been raining but none of us were deterred.

Houston, TX – Saturday, September 21st, 5:30pm – This evening, Houston residents and activists with Tar Sands Blockade have condemned the property of Keystone XL Project Director Les Cherwenuk with the power of the People’s Eminent Domain.
“I’m here to stand with all the other Texas landowners whose land has been stolen by Les Cherwenuk and the Keystone XL pipeline,” said Jerry Hightower, a Texan whose family’s land is crossed by Keystone XL and the Exxon Pegasus pipeline. “If Les is willing to endanger Texans’ property with a fraudulent eminent domain process, he should start with his own.”
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with kossacks who are caring and supportive of one another. So bring your stories, jokes, photos, funny pics, music, and interesting videos, as well as links—including quotations—to diaries, news stories, and books that you think this community would appreciate.
Finally, readers may notice that most who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but newcomers should not feel excluded. We welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
