If House Republicans go ahead and shut down the government, low-income mothers could face big trouble feeding themselves and their young children. While the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and free school meals should continue into or through October in the event of a shutdown, the program for Women, Infants, and Children could
come to an abrupt stop in the early days of a shutdown:
No additional federal funds would be available to support the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC)’s clinical services, food benefits and administrative costs. States may have some funds available from infant formula rebates or other sources, including spendforward authority,to continue operations for a week or so, but States would likely be unable to sustain operations for a longer period. Contingency funds will be available to help States – but even this funding would not fully mitigate a shortfall for the entiremonth of October.
WIC feeds not only young children but pregnant or nursing mothers. Once again we see how when a wealthy woman like Ann Romney stays home with her kids, it's the greatest most important job in the history of ever, but when it comes to low-income women trying to keep themselves and their children healthy, punitive is the name of the game.
Stand with Daily Kos and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in denouncing Republicans who would completely shut down the government just to destroy Obamacare.
