The political situation is endangering the country. The Republicans have to be stopped somehow. Somehow the voters have to be convinced that these extreme Republicans have to be removed from power before they do any more damage. How can this be emphasized to the nation?
I propose holding a national Democratic convention in the summer of 2014. Obviously this is unusual, but we are in an unusual situation. Even without a national candidate to choose, there is a national political emergency that has to be dealt with.
The unusual nature of a midterm national convention would highlight to the nation that we are not in a normal situation, but a political emergency.
The message of the convention is that voters cannot afford to allow current Republicans,, even "moderate" Republicans, to have veto power over the government. Voters cannot afford to vote for the man, if the man is a Republican, since that enables the paralysis and extreme tactics.
The experience of California should be highlighted for a national audience. They got rid of the constant budget crisis that made some people say that California was ungovernable when enough Republicans were defeated that they lost any veto power.
The main business of the convention would be to adopt a resolution saying that the future of the country is endangered by extreme conservative politics, and they must be stopped by the voters in November of 2014.
A sane conservative opposition party would be useful to the country, if for no other reason than to keep the rest of us honest. But what we are seeing now is frightening.
